Minor Hindu girl made to wear burqa and lured away by Muslim man in Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
In the Gauri Bazar police station area, located in the Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh, a minor Hindu girl was lured away by a Muslim man. According to media reports, the girl’s father stated that the accused, a youth from the Muslim community, fled with his daughter after making her wear a burqa. He had lured her and also persuaded her to steal all the jewellery from her house before eloping with him. The actions of the accused were captured on CCTV. Following the elopement, the girl’s father and mother approached the police and appealed to the Superintendent of Police to find their daughter and apprehend the accused. The police registered a case in the matter and subsequently began an investigation. Following this, the Sadar MLA took the matter seriously and wrote a letter to the DGP (Director General of Police). Additional Superintendent of Police, Arvind Verma, said that after registering the case, a team was formed to arrest the accused. He also stated that all necessary actions would be taken in this matter.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, a minor Hindu girl was lured away by a Muslim man. This incident raises serious concerns regarding possible religious profiling of the victim, especially given the documented pattern of Muslim men targeting Hindu girls, particularly minors, due to deep-seated animosity towards the Hindu community. It is worth noting that if the Muslim perpetrator had simply sought a relationship, a Muslim girl might have been more accessible to him than a Hindu girl. The deliberate targeting of a Hindu girl strongly suggests that religious profiling could have played a part in the crime. However, it remains equally possible that this was a crime of opportunity, rather than a case of crime motivated by religious animosity. It is also crucial to highlight that the Hindu victim in this instance is a minor. Therefore, any supposed “consent” given by her holds no legal standing under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Minors lack the maturity and legal capacity to make adult decisions such as engaging in romantic relationships or eloping. It can also be argued that making a minor Hindu girl wear a burqa demonstrates religiously motivated targeting. This argument cannot be dismissed outright, as there is a longstanding precedent in which Hindu women and girls have been coerced by Muslim perpetrators to wear a burqa as a means of imposing Islam and erasing their Hindu identity. Such actions are often intended to assert control and suppress the victim’s Hindu faith. However, in this particular case, it is entirely possible that the burqa was used more as a disguise to facilitate elopement and conceal the girl’s identity, rather than as an act of religious imposition. At present, there is no conclusive evidence to confirm a religious motive, nor has the victim’s family made any statements suggesting this. Therefore, this case has currently been added to the ‘Undecided’ database. If any further information emerges that demonstrates the crime to be religiously motivated, then this case will be added to the hate crime database.
