Case Summary

In Barhatta Upazila of Netrakona district, Bangladesh, a 16-year-old Hindu girl named Mukti Burman was brutally hacked to death by a Muslim man, Kausar Miyan, after she rejected him for a relationship. According to reports, the incident occurred when Mukti, a Class 10 student at Premnagar Chalipura High School, was returning home from her school. At around 3:30 pm, as she and her classmates reached the Chalipura area, the Muslim youth, Kausar Miyan, intercepted them and began stabbing the Hindu girl in front of her classmates. Her classmates, terrified, fled the scene while screaming for help. Locals rushed to rescue the Hindu girl and took her to the hospital. After initial treatment, she was transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on the same day. Mukti’s uncle, Liton Burman, revealed that the Muslim youth had been harassing her for a long time, and the matter was brought to the attention of Kausar’s family, but no action was taken. Mukti came from a very poor family and was described by her school principal as calm, intelligent, and hardworking. The Muslim accused was arrested the very next day by the police, and further legal action was taken against him. This case highlights the persecution faced by the Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, marked by systemic discrimination, violence, and forced conversions. Hindu women, particularly young girls, are often abducted, raped, forcibly converted to Islam, and married off to Muslim men with little to no legal recourse. Hindu temples are frequently vandalised or destroyed, and Hindu communities are subjected to social and economic marginalisation. Blasphemy laws are disproportionately used against Hindus, leading to false accusations and severe punishments. Many Hindu families are forced to flee their homes due to religious intolerance, living in constant fear of attacks. This sustained persecution highlights the dire conditions for Hindus in a Muslim majority country like Bangladesh, where their religious identity makes them targets of oppression.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case must be understood not as an isolated criminal incident, but within the sustained context of religiously motivated violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. Although the killing of Mukti Burman fits into a larger pattern of violence in which Hindu girls are routinely subjected to harassment, forced conversion, or fatal retaliation for rejecting advances by Muslim men. However, without clear evidence of religious animosity, it would be inappropriate to categorise this as an instance of religiously motivated hate crime against Hindus. As of now, the primary motive behind the crime appears to be non-religious and more opportunistic. However, this cannot be completely separated from the added context that in Bangladesh, Hindus are a vulnerable minority. There is a persistent pattern of violent behaviour towards Hindus by Muslim extremists, rooted in religious animosity. Furthermore, the state and administration also often normalise such acts, overlooking the crimes when the victims are Hindus. Nevertheless, in the absence of concrete evidence pointing to an explicitly religious motive, this remains speculative. For this reason, this case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If any further information emerges that indicates a religious motivation behind this crime, then it would be reclassified and included under the Hate Crime database.
