Case Summary

In Hajipur, Bihar, near the Ganga Bridge police station, locals and members of a Hindu organisation intercepted a truck transporting cows and handed it over to the local police. As per the reports, near the Ganga Bridge police station on the main Haajipur–Patna route, locals noticed a truck carrying dozens of cows that were tied tightly and uncomfortably, struggling inside the vehicle. Upon witnessing this, the locals informed members of the Rashtriya Bajrang Dal. Soon after, Rashtriya Bajrang Dal workers and others reached the location. Taking advantage of the gathering crowd, the smugglers and the truck driver managed to escape. The workers then informed the local police. On receiving the information, Ganga Bridge police arrived at the scene. It was reported that after the necessary documentation, all the cows were sent to the Motihari gaushala. Speaking on the matter, Ranjan Kumar Singh, district president of Rashtriya Bajrang Dal, said that they had received information about cows being tied and transported in a truck near the Ganga Bridge police station. Upon reaching the spot, they found that the cows were in pain and moaning due to the conditions. The truck was then handed over to the police at Ganga Bridge station.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are smuggled for slaughter by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef), and desecrate Hindu temples. In all cases of cow smuggling or slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor. However, in the absence of any concrete evidence that the crime was religiously motivated, this case is being categorised under the 'Undecided' database. If more details emerge that demonstrate religious animosity as a motivating factor behind the crime, then it will be added to the hate crime database.
