Minor Hindu girl lured by Muslim man posing as Hindu girl; trafficking attempt to Dubai foiled
Case Summary
In Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, a 16-year-old minor Hindu girl was lured by a Muslim man named Tanveer Alam. The accused deceitfully posed as a Hindu girl named Pooja. According to reports, the minor Hindu girl got acquainted with the accused through an online game called "Free Fire." The accused had created the gaming ID with the Hindu name Pooja through which he befriended the Hindu girl. Over the course of a month, he gained the girl's trust through in-game interactions, and they eventually shared their contact numbers and started communicating through Instagram and WhatsApp. During this time, the victim was unaware of his real identity, still believing she was interacting with a female friend. On July 20, Tanveer, pretending to be Pooja, called her to meet in person and manipulated her into coming to the railway station without informing her family. There, he revealed his real identity and that he was a boy. The girl was shocked by this revelation, but the accused somehow convinced her to travel with him to Mumbai under the pretext of sightseeing. During the train journey, the girl observed that the accused was browsing through photos and messages of multiple girls and noticed he was receiving suspicious phone calls. Her suspicions increased when, upon reaching Mumbai, she heard Tanveer call someone and say, "Maal aa gya hai station se utha lo" (The girl has arrived, pick her from the station). Alarmed by this, she approached a Government Railway Police (GRP) constable at the station and narrated her ordeal. When confronted, Tanveer tried to pass her off as his sister, but the police grew suspicious of him and attempted to take him to the police station, upon which he fled the scene. The GRP contacted Jabalpur police and facilitated the girl's safe return the following day, on July 21. The complaint was filed, and it was reported that Tanveer had kidnapped the victim and intended to traffic her, with plans to send her to Dubai. Her family also reported that Tanveer had a history of trapping girls using fake identities and demanded a forensic investigation of his mobile phone and strict legal action against him. As of the date of writing this report, a case was registered by the police against the accused, and the investigation was ongoing.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of: - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within it, the sub-category selected is: - Man pretends to be Hindu, with the tertiary category being: - Name changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. This case has been added to the tracker because a minor Hindu girl was lured and kidnapped by a Muslim man who deceitfully posed as a Hindu girl to initiate contact through an online gaming platform. It is evident from his conversations and suspicious activity during the train journey that his intention was to traffic the minor Hindu girl. His statement at Mumbai station makes the purpose of the abduction unmistakably clear. This strongly indicates that the accused was part of a broader network involved in the trafficking of Hindu girls. The perpetrator deliberately concealed his religious identity to initiate and sustain a friendship with a minor Hindu girl. This itself is a clear manifestation of bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. By concealing his true identity, he exploited her trust, targeting her under false pretences. This indicates a premeditated intent to manipulate her based on her religious background. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal but can also be interpreted as an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs. This deception was not incidental; it was the foundation of his approach, revealing a calculated effort to exploit her specifically because of her Hindu identity. Disclaimer: Media reports state that the victim got acquainted with the accused through online gaming, though no exact date or month is provided. Thus, to document this case, we have used July 20, 2025, as the date of the incident, as on this date she was kidnapped. While media coverage of the incident emerged on July 26, 2025, the Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, not when it was reported.
