Cows rescued from illegal smuggling in Bharauli, Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
In Bharauli, located in the Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh, cows were being illegally smuggled in a pickup vehicle. The police rescued the cows and initiated legal action against the smuggler. According to news reports, the Narhi police successfully intercepted an attempted case of cow smuggling. On the day of the incident, the police team was patrolling under the direction of Inspector-in-Charge Nadeem Ahmed Faridi. Acting on information received from an informant, the police learned that cows were being transported to Bihar in a white Tata Yodha pickup. Following this, the police set up a barricade at the Bharauli intersection and waited for the vehicle. Upon spotting the police, the pickup driver attempted to escape, turning onto the Saraya Ujiar Ghat road. However, due to a flooded river ahead, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled into the darkness. The police detained the pickup at 5 am. Its number was UP60AT9699. Nine cows were recovered from the vehicle, out of which only four cows and one calf were alive. The remaining four cows were found dead. All the animals had been tied mercilessly. Subsequently, the police took action against the vehicle under the Motor Vehicles Act (MV Act). In addition, a case was registered under the Cow Slaughter Prevention Act and the Animal Cruelty Act, and an investigation was initiated by the police.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are smuggled for slaughter by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef), and desecrate Hindu temples. In all cases of cow smuggling or slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor. However, in the absence of any concrete evidence that the crime was religiously motivated, this case is being categorised under the 'Undecided' database. If more details emerge that demonstrate religious animosity as a motivating factor behind the crime, then it will be added to the hate crime database.
