Hindu woman deceived by Muslim man posing as Hindu, raped, forced into conversion, attempted suicide
Case Summary
In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, a Hindu woman was befriended by a Muslim man who pretended to be Hindu. The accused raped her and forced her to convert to Islam and marry him in a Nikah ceremony. When she refused, he blackmailed her with her obscene photos and videos and also issued her death threats. The Muslim accused’s mother and his Muslim friend were also involved in the crime. The victim even attempted suicide due to the persistent harassment. The main perpetrator was identified as Sultan Roshan Nagori, a Muslim man. Sultan’s mother and his friend Arif were also complicit in the crime. The Hindu victim, originally from Haryana, worked at an IT company in Indore. Sultan Roshan Nagori, who worked with her at the same company, befriended her while concealing his true identity. He used a false Hindu name to deceive the Hindu woman. In 2018, Sultan invited her to Golden Farm at Scheme No. 136. There, he tricked her into consuming alcohol and then forcibly had physical relations with her. During the incident, he also took photos and videos of the woman. Subsequently, he began pressuring and blackmailing her to convert to Islam and marry him in a Nikah ceremony. The woman refused to marry, stating that she was a Hindu and did not wish to convert. In response, the accused threatened to make the photos and videos public. Through blackmail, he raped her in Ajmer and Nakhrali Dhani as well. Sultan kept the woman in a hotel for two days, threatening her, and sexually assaulted her on several occasions. Troubled by her ordeal, the woman went to Chandigarh in 2019, but after returning to Indore in March 2025, the accused began following her again. He again called her to a hotel and raped her again. As a result of the continuous harassment, the woman attempted suicide. Upon learning of the case, Hindu activists from Hindu Jagran Manch, a Hindu organisation, intervened, detained the accused, and handed him over to the Lasudiya police station. Members of the organisation stated that this was a well-planned case of 'love jihad'. Reports also confirmed that Sultan’s mother and his friend Arif persistently pressured the woman to convert to Islam and marry Sultan. Sultan's mother even threatened her with black magic if she refused to convert. In this case, Additional DCP Amarendra Singh reported that the police had registered an FIR. The accused and the victim had known each other since their school days. The police continued to investigate the matter, with enquiries also underway to determine whether any organised gang was involved.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case is being added to the tracker under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within this, the first subcategory selected is- Man pretends to be Hindu. The tertiary category selected is- Name Changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The second subcategory selected is- Brainwashed and/or Groomed. In our database, we have not added incidents where women have converted to another religion of their free will and no allegations of forced/involuntary conversion have been made. However, there are certain cases of conversion where the consent itself is a result of the brainwashing or grooming of a minor by the non-Hindu perpetrator trying to victimise a woman for her Hindu religious identity. The phenomenon of grooming points to non-Hindu perpetrators identifying their Hindu victims’ vulnerabilities and exploiting them over months and sometimes years, to extract the supposed ‘consent’ in order to convert their religion. In most cases of grooming, the victims are minors or the grooming started when the victim was a minor. In other cases of grooming, the non-Hindu perpetrator brainwashes and grooms a minor victim to extract their trust and then proceeds to rape them repeatedly with the intent of converting them to their faith. It is pertinent to understand here that when the victim is a minor, the ‘consent’ to convert or enter into a romantic relationship with an adult itself is redundant – addressed by POCSO. While every case of conversion of a minor and incidents of establishing a physical relationship with a minor by an adult is a crime, for the purpose of this database, a case would be considered a hate crime only if there is a distinct religious angle to the grooming. For example, in the UK, if a Hindu minor is targeted by Pakistani grooming gangs, it would be considered a hate crime because the victims are specifically targeted owing to their non-Muslim religious identity with the perpetrators being Muslim. In other cases, if a Hindu minor is brainwashed into entering a physical relationship with the non-Hindu adult perpetrator and the family alleges grooming/brainwashing of the minor to convert her religion, it would form a part of this database. If the victim is a Hindu adult, the case would form a part of this database only if the victim herself says that she was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. However, if the victim is deceased (murdered or otherwise), the case would form a part of this database if her family/friends provided testimony that the victim was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. Since these crimes have a distinct religious angle where the victim is being targeted owing to her Hindu religious identity, these cases are considered a hate crime. The third subcategory selected is- Forced conversion before marriage. Within this, the tertiary category selected is- Forced to do Nikah. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The fourth subcategory selected is- Blackmailed to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is blackmailed to convert her religion, owing to her religious identity of being a Hindu. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim, however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual and the non-Hindu man starts blackmailing a Hindu woman to convert her religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu woman is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to her or her family, threats of violence etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The fifth subcategory selected is- Assault or threat upon refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces threats or assault after she refuses to convert and change her religious identity owing to pressure/force by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert to Islam and upon her refusal, assaults or threatens the victim. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the woman was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. The sixth subcategory selected is- Rape upon refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces pressure/threats/violence to convert and change her religious identity by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressuring the Hindu woman to convert. In some of these cases, the association could be non-consensual as well or, the religious identity of the non-Muslim man could be previously unknown to the Hindu victim. As the case may be, in such cases, the non-Hindu man forces himself sexually on the Hindu woman when she refuses his advances and pressures to convert her religion. The rape of the woman is often seen as either a punishment for the woman refusing to convert. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The seventh subcategory selected is- Suicide for being forced to or pressured to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with a non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces pressure/threats/violence to convert and change her religious identity by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert. In some of these cases, unable to bear the pressure/threat/violence being mounted by the non-Hindu partner to convert, the Hindu woman commits suicide. In such cases, often, threats are also given to the family members of the Hindu woman. Since such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim, leading to the woman committing suicide, these cases are categorized as a hate crime. In this case, a Hindu woman was deceived, sexually exploited, blackmailed, threatened, forced to convert to Islam, and pressured into marrying the Muslim perpetrator in a Nikah ceremony. The Muslim perpetrator befriended the Hindu woman by posing as a Hindu, a deliberate act of betrayal that exploited her faith and trust. This is a clear example of a hate crime directed at a Hindu woman because of her religious identity. The religious motive behind the crime is evident as the Muslim perpetrator deliberately concealed his Muslim identity in order to deceive the Hindu victim. By hiding his own faith, he not only manipulated her trust but also demonstrated bias and malicious intent towards her religion. This tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to exploit a Hindu individual represents both a personal and a communal betrayal, speaking to a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their religious beliefs. Such actions are clear examples of a religiously motivated hate crime. After befriending the woman, the Muslim perpetrator persuaded her to drink alcohol and raped her. This behaviour shows clear religious hostility, as he deliberately targeted and sexually exploited her because of her Hindu identity. In this context, rape is not only an act of physical violation but a calculated attempt to dominate and subjugate a Hindu woman due to her religious background. It was an assertion of power meant to crush her spirit and autonomy as a Hindu. Deceiving a woman through a false identity and then subsequently subjecting her to sexual violence due to her religious identity underscores a profound level of animosity and prejudice. Furthermore, the Muslim perpetrator forced her to convert to Islam and marry him in a Nikah ceremony. This demonstrates an explicit intention of erasing her Hindu identity and compelling her to embrace Islam against her will. This went beyond a quest for personal control; it was about asserting the supposed superiority of his religion over hers and treating her Hindu beliefs as something to be discarded. This forced conversion and marriage violated both her autonomy and her religious beliefs, making the religious motivation behind the crime crystal clear. When the woman refused to convert, the Muslim perpetrator blackmailed her with obscene photos and videos he had taken during the sexual abuse. The blackmail and repeated threats were explicitly linked to her refusal to convert, highlighting ongoing religious enmity and his determination to erase her Hindu identity. Such acts of blackmailing to forcibly convert a Hindu woman to Islam showcase the amount of hostility and hatred the Muslim perpetrator held for the victim due to her Hindu identity. The involvement of the perpetrator's mother and his friend Arif expanded this horror into a wider campaign of religious targeting. They continually pressured the woman to convert to Islam, and his mother even threatened her with black magic if she persisted in her refusal. Invoking supernatural fear was not simply an extension of control, but a direct assault on the woman’s Hindu faith by using intimidation and threats to strip her of her identity. This showcases that the targeting of the Hindu victim was a well-calculated and coordinated effort to erase her Hindu identity. Such acts showcase that the crime was motivated by hostility towards the victim's faith. Additionally, the Muslim perpetrator repeatedly issued death threats to the Hindu woman when she resisted his demands to convert and marry him. These threats were calculated to intimidate and force her to abandon her faith, underlining that the violence was not random but rooted in religious animosity. It is also important to note that the Muslim perpetrator had raped the victim on multiple occasions for refusing to convert to Islam and marry him. Such actions clearly showcase the religious motivations behind the crime. In such instances, rape is used as a tool to punish the Hindu victim for refusing to comply with the perpetrator's demand. The Hindu victim is subjected to rape in order to break her spirit and make her submit to the demand of forced conversion and Nikah, Islamic marriage, laid out by the Muslim perpetrator. This glaringly demonstrates the religious motive behind the crime. Furthermore, the relentless pressure to forsake her Hindu identity and the total disregard for her autonomy and well-being eventually drove the Hindu woman to such despair that she attempted to end her life. This highlights the severity of the abuse and the extent to which she was targeted and persecuted purely for her religious identity. Acts such as these reveal a deep-seated hatred and contempt towards the Hindu community and their beliefs. Hence, this is a hate crime as the Hindu woman was systematically targeted, deceived, sexually exploited, and relentlessly pressured to abandon her faith and convert to Islam by a Muslim man. Hence, it is accordingly being added to the hate crime database in the Hinduphobia Tracker.
