Case Summary

In Gunarsa village, located in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, a Shiva temple was desecrated by unidentified miscreants who vandalised sacred idols of Hindu deities. The attack occurred while the temple was undergoing painting and renovation work. In the afternoon, when the workers stepped out for lunch, anti-social elements entered the premises and damaged the Shivalinga and murti of Lord Ganesha. Both idols were found broken inside the temple. Later, when devotees arrived for worship, they were shocked to find the desecration. The sight of the shattered Shivalinga and Ganesha idol triggered outrage among the local Hindu community. Within minutes, villagers gathered at the temple, and tensions escalated, especially as the incident occurred during Sawan, a month considered especially sacred for the worship of Lord Shiva. Upon receiving the information, the police reached the spot and managed to calm the agitated crowd. Officers Ravikant Parashar and Inspector Dharmendra Sonkar inspected the site and assured the villagers that strict action would be taken against those responsible. Village head Sukhpal emphasised the spiritual importance of Sawan and described the act as a grave offence against the Hindu faith. He warned that if swift arrests were not made, the villagers would be compelled to launch a protest. The police launched an investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the culprits and bring them to justice.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbols. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. The other subcategory selected is- Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity, but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. This case has been included in the tracker because the perpetrators deliberately targeted a Hindu temple during the holy month of Sawan. A temple is an institution of profound spiritual significance within the Hindu faith. For Hindus, temples are far more than mere physical structures; they are sacred spaces believed to embody the divine presence of Hindu deities. Acts of violence against such spaces are a clear example of religiously motivated hate crimes targeting Hindus and their sacred places of worship. The attack also involved the intentional desecration of Hindu religious symbols like the Shivalinga and the sacred idol of Lord Ganesha. In Hinduism, idols are not simply artistic representations; they are deeply revered manifestations of the divine. The Shivalinga is worshipped as a symbol of Lord Shiva, and the idols of Hindu gods hold spiritual significance. They form an integral part of the temple’s sanctity. Their desecration is a direct affront to the religious sentiments of Hindus and an act of profound disrespect. Such acts stem from entrenched religious hostility and hatred directed against Hinduism, its followers, and their holy shrines. Beyond the physical damage, the psychological impact of such attacks is profound. For devotees, temples are places of solace, peace, and connection with the divine. When sacred temples are targeted and their sacred idols are vandalised, it disrupts the sense of security and belonging that the Hindu community finds in these institutions. The pain caused by idol desecration is not limited to tangible loss; it wounds the collective psyche of Hindus, leaving many feeling isolated, vulnerable, and marginalised. Such attacks are not simply acts of vandalism; they are calculated assaults on the faith and identity of the Hindu community. In this case, although the perpetrators remain unidentified, the nature of their actions clearly demonstrates hostility towards Hinduism and its followers. Therefore, this case is being added to the hate crime database in the Hinduphobia Tracker.
