Case Summary

In Ernakulam, Kerala, six Hindu women, including minors, were lured into romantic relationships by Muslim men. The accused then pushed these women into sex trafficking. The Muslim perpetrators in this case were identified as Akbar Ali, Shafeeq, and Mansoor Ali. The Hinduphobia Tracker contacted the police regarding this case. The police confirmed that all six victims were Hindu. According to media reports, the incident came to light when, during a police raid, six young Hindu women were rescued by the police. The victims also included minor Hindu girls. The victims were lured through false promises of love, drugged, and then forced into prostitution by the Muslim perpetrators. The mastermind behind the racket was Akbar Ali and his Muslim accomplices. Following this, Akbar was arrested along with his three accomplices in coordinated operations led by the Elamakkara and Kadavanthra police in Ernakulam district. According to police investigations, Akbar Ali posed as a friendly youth and lured Hindu women into relationships. His prime targets were plus two students and tech workers. He usually befriended them in malls and cafes. Once emotional bonds were established, he introduced them to drugs and captured their intimate photos and videos. Subsequently, he used them to blackmail and coerce the victims to join his sex trafficking racket. The sex trafficking centre operated from a rented house near Ernakulam South railway station. It was running under the guise of a private institution, with a nearby tea stall acting as a front. The house from which the Hindu victims were rescued was one of multiple branches of prostitution centres run by Akbar's racket, with online platforms and fake massage centres used to advertise the victim women. The police recovered several obscene photos of the Hindu victims from the Muslim accused’s phone. As per the police, more than 100 such centres were operating in Ernakulam town alone. Several Muslim men like Akbar Ali were involved in luring Hindu women under the guise of romantic relationships and then exploiting them. The police began further investigation into this matter and assured that all perpetrators running such rackets would be apprehended. The accused, Akbar Ali, and his accomplices were presented before a court. The court sent them to judicial custody. The police launched further investigations into this case.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Brainwashed and/or Groomed. The tertiary category selected in this case is- Pattern of targeting minors and Rape and Sexual assault/ harassment. In our database, we have not added incidents where women have converted to another religion of their free will and no allegations of forced/involuntary conversion have been made. However, there are certain cases of conversion where the consent itself is a result of the brainwashing or grooming of a minor by the non-Hindu perpetrator trying to victimise a woman for her Hindu religious identity. The phenomenon of grooming points to non-Hindu perpetrators identifying their Hindu victims’ vulnerabilities and exploiting them over months and sometimes years, to extract the supposed ‘consent’ in order to convert their religion. In most cases of grooming, the victims are minors or the grooming started when the victim was a minor. In other cases of grooming, the non-Hindu perpetrator brainwashes and grooms a minor victim to extract their trust and then proceeds to rape them repeatedly with the intent of converting them to their faith. It is pertinent to understand here that when the victim is a minor, the ‘consent’ to convert or enter into a romantic relationship with an adult itself is redundant – addressed by POCSO. While every case of conversion of a minor and incidents of establishing a physical relationship with a minor by an adult is a crime, for the purpose of this database, a case would be considered a hate crime only if there is a distinct religious angle to the grooming. For example, in the UK, if a Hindu minor is targeted by Pakistani grooming gangs, it would be considered a hate crime because the victims are specifically targeted owing to their non-Muslim religious identity with the perpetrators being Muslim. In other cases, if a Hindu minor is brainwashed into entering a physical relationship with the non-Hindu adult perpetrator and the family alleges grooming/brainwashing of the minor to convert her religion, it would form a part of this database. If the victim is a Hindu adult, the case would form a part of this database only if the victim herself says that she was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. However, if the victim is deceased (murdered or otherwise), the case would form a part of this database if her family/friends provided testimony that the victim was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. Since these crimes have a distinct religious angle where the victim is being targeted owing to her Hindu religious identity, these cases are considered a hate crime. This case is a clear demonstration of targeted hate crime, where Hindu women, including minors, were deliberately singled out based on their religious identity and exploited by Muslim perpetrators. The Hindu victims were lured into romantic relationships, then were drugged and coerced to join the sex trafficking racket led by Akbar Ali. Since all the victims were Hindus, it can be reasonably inferred that the accused religiously profiled his targets based on their religion. This deliberate targeting and exploitation of Hindu women reveals a pattern of communal animosity rather than random criminality. These women were not merely caught in the wrong place at the wrong time; instead, they were specifically lured into relationships by Muslim perpetrators under false pretences. Such targeted victimisation showcases the deep-seated religious animosity towards the Hindu community. The inclusion of minors among the victims compounds the severity of this hate crime. Targeting young Hindu girls, particularly those still in their formative years, demonstrates a calculated effort to devastate the Hindu community by preying on its most vulnerable members. Since the victims are minors, any element of consent and genuine change of conscience is missing ab initio. Minors, due to their young age and lack of maturity, are particularly vulnerable to manipulation and coercion. They may not have the ability to fully understand the implications of entering into a relationship with an adult. In this case, the Muslim perpetrators purposely targeted and exploited this vulnerability of the Hindu victims. The systematic approach by gaining trust through emotional bonds, introducing narcotics, and coercing victims into sex trafficking shows an efficient strategy aimed at breaking the Hindu victims psychologically and physically. Such actions clearly showcase the religious hostility acting as a motivating factor in this case. When minors are involved, the criminality and cruelty intensify, but the pattern remains — the targeting is not random. Such acts are committed out of doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith that treats non-Muslims, especially Hindus, as inferior and sees their women as targets to convert or control. This mindset turns what may seem like a crime of trafficking into something far more dangerous: a hate crime against the Hindu community. It uses a woman’s faith as a weapon, aiming to harm not just individuals but the dignity and strength of Hindu society itself. Since the exploitation of Hindu women in this case stems from deep-rooted ideological hatred and targets them on the basis of their religious identity, it clearly qualifies as a hate crime and thus warrants inclusion in the tracker. Disclaimer: Media reports do not specify the total number of Muslim perpetrators involved; they only mention Akbar Ali, Mansoor, and Shafeeq. Therefore, for the purpose of documentation, we are recording the perpetrator count as 3. Media reports also do not indicate how many of the six women were minors. Accordingly, for documentation purposes, the victims’ age count is recorded as ‘Unknown.’
