Two Muslim cow smugglers arrested by police in Hapur; part of a larger cow smuggling network
Case Summary
In Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, two Muslim men who were part of a cow smuggling gang were arrested by the police during a brief encounter. The encounter took place during late-night routine patrolling, where various vehicles were being checked. During this time police attempted to stop a Swift car. Instead of complying, the Muslim accused opened fire on the police team. In retaliation, the police also responded and fired back, injuring both the accused, after which they were taken to hospital. The arrested accused have been identified as two Muslim men: Haseeb alias Chuja, a resident of Manota village, and Merajuddin, a resident of Mohalla Tanki Joya. From the site of the encounter, police recovered a Swift car, two illegal pistols, several empty cartridges, and tools used for cow slaughter. Upon interrogation, both confessed to being professional cow slaughterers and admitted that they have been involved in such activities for a long time. It was also revealed that several cases had been registered against them across multiple districts, including the districts of Amroha, Sambhal, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, and Saharanpur, related to the Cow Slaughter Act, Gangster Act, and Arms Act. As of the date of writing this report, police have launched an investigation into uncovering the larger illegal cow slaughter network which they are part of. Raids were underway to apprehend the remaining accused.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor; however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, they will be added to the Hate Crime Database.
