Dalit Hindu woman lured away, forcibly converted, and coerced into fake video by Muslim man in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
In Mustapur Badera village, located in the Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu Dalit woman was lured away by a Muslim man named Nazim. He forcibly converted her to Islam and pressured her into marrying him. Subsequently, he coerced her into recording a video in which she was made to state that she had eloped with him and converted to Islam of her own free will. Reports confirm that the Hindu victim was a student and also worked at a hospital in Delhi. Nazim, the accused, lived in the same village. They had been in a relationship for a considerable period. Nazim persuaded the woman to elope with him and took her to Delhi. As per the victim's parents, the woman had gone to Moradabad railway station to drop off her younger sister, but she did not return. The family searched for her extensively, including at the homes of relatives. When all efforts failed to locate her, they grew increasingly concerned. Following her disappearance, the family lodged a missing persons report at the local police station after she remained untraceable for two days. Soon after, the matter attracted attention, and the members of Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) gathered at the police station. They demanded the immediate arrest of the man involved and the safe return of the woman. Subsequently, on 12th July 2025, the police recovered the woman from Delhi and arrested Nazim, who was with her at the time. In a statement given before the magistrate in court on 14th July 2025, the woman stated that Nazim had forced her to convert to Islam by threatening her. He also pressured her to marry him. Following this, he recorded a video of her and circulated it on social media. In the video, she was compelled to declare that she had changed her religion and eloped with him of her own will. After the statement was recorded before the magistrate, the police handed the woman over to her family. Rural SP Kunwar Akash Singh confirmed that the statement had been officially recorded and that further legal action would follow on the basis of it. Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal strongly reacted to the incident. The organisations staged protests at the police station, describing the case as a ‘jihadi conspiracy’ and demanding strict action against the accused. Police officials confirmed that, based on the woman’s testimony, a case had been registered against Nazim under serious sections, and further investigation was underway.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Forced conversion before marriage. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The other subcategory selected is- Assault or threat upon refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces threats or assault after she refuses to convert and change her religious identity owing to pressure/force by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert to Islam and upon her refusal, assaults or threatens the victim. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the woman was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. In this case, a Hindu woman was lured into a relationship by a Muslim man, who eventually convinced her to elope with him. Following this, she was forcibly converted to Islam and pressured into marrying the perpetrator. While the accused did not conceal his religious identity, the nature of their relationship suggested that the woman was initially led to believe her faith would not be a barrier to their romantic involvement. Trusting his assurances, she entered into the relationship, during which she was manipulated into leaving her home and travelling with him to Delhi. Although the victim is an adult, the psychological grooming she endured, combined with the deliberate targeting of her for religious conversion, showcases the religious motive behind the act. The Muslim accused subsequently threatened the victim and forcibly converted her to Islam. He also pressured her to marry him. This act of forced conversion and religiously pressured marriage demonstrates the deliberate and malicious intent of the perpetrator, centred around changing the victim's faith. Such actions not only violate her personal beliefs but constitute an assault on her religious autonomy. They reflect an effort to strip Hindu individuals of their faith. The subsequent threats were used as a tool to break the victim's spirit and make her comply with the demands of the Muslim perpetrator, making this a crime motivated by religious animosity. In addition, the victim was coerced into recording a video in which she was forced to declare that she had converted of her own free will and had voluntarily eloped with the accused. This further highlights the religiously motivated intent behind the crime. It reveals how Hindu victims are manipulated and coerced into giving false statements that serve to protect their perpetrators, who target them solely on account of their Hindu identity. In summary, this case clearly illustrates a pattern of coercion, psychological manipulation and exploitation, all used as tools by the Muslim accused to forcibly change the victim’s religious beliefs. Such deliberate efforts to intimidate, control and harm Hindu individuals solely because of their faith underscore the hate-driven nature of this incident and justify its inclusion in the hate crime database. Disclaimer: While media reports do not provide the exact date on which the victim was first lured into the relationship, they confirm that she was persuaded to elope with the accused on 9th July 2025. For documentation purposes, Hinduphobia Tracker is using 9th July 2025 as the indicative date of the incident, even though media coverage emerged on 14th July 2025. The Hinduphobia Tracker records the date of the incident itself rather than the date it was reported in the media.
