Case Summary

In the Agar Malwa district of Madhya Pradesh, a 25-year-old Dalit Hindu woman was repeatedly raped by her Muslim employer, who also threatened her and pressured her to convert to Islam and marry him. The accused has been identified as Altaf Multani, who intended to change the woman’s name to Afsana. In 2024, the woman began working under Altaf Multani. During her employment, he called her to his office and sexually assaulted her. When she resisted, he threatened to fire her and kill her children. Under the guise of work, he took her to Ujjain, Indore, and Ghosla, where he raped her on multiple occasions. She stated that Altaf coerced her to convert to Islam, enter into a Nikah with him, and abandon her Hindu identity by adopting the name Afsana. Upon her refusal, he subjected her to ongoing physical and mental abuse and withheld her wages. Eventually, the woman left her job and approached the police. A case was registered against Altaf Multani under charges of rape, forced religious conversion, and provisions of the SC/ST Act. Authorities launched an investigation and were searching for the accused.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Predatory Proselytisation. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Predatory Proselytisation by grooming, brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination. Within this, the tertiary category selected is- Rape and sexual assault/ harassment. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytization, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. The other subcategory selected is- Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. This incident is a stark demonstration of a religiously motivated crime against a Hindu woman. The sexual violence, followed by sustained religious coercion by the Muslim perpetrator, makes it clear that her Hindu identity was the primary reason she was targeted. The perpetrator first raped the victim and then pressured her to convert to Islam. This was not an isolated instance of abuse—it was a sustained campaign of coercion aimed at stripping her of her religious freedom. The demand that she convert, marry him through Nikah, and adopt the Islamic name Afsana reveals a calculated effort to erase her Hindu identity. The sexual assault was not only a grievous crime in itself, but also weaponised as a tool of religious domination. In several such cases, Muslim perpetrators have used sexual violence to coerce Hindu women into adopting Islam, reflecting a clear pattern of religiously motivated targeting. Moreover, the accused threatened to kill her children and terminate her employment if she resisted. These were not mere acts of cruelty—they were deliberate strategies to break her spirit and force submission. The use of her maternal vulnerability and economic dependence shows a premeditated attempt to exploit her because she was a Hindu woman—someone the perpetrator viewed as a target to be subdued and converted. The continued physical and mental abuse, along with withholding her salary when she refused to convert, further reinforces the coercive nature of the crime. The accused exploited her position as an employer to press his religious agenda, showing that his aim was not just personal gratification, but religious subjugation. These actions stem from doctrinal hostility towards the Hindu faith. In Abrahamic belief systems, non-adherents are viewed as inferior until they accept the dominant faith. This worldview, when turned into action, often results in coercive acts—including sexual violence—against Hindu women, with conversion as the intended outcome. In this case, rape and intimidation were used as instruments of religious conversion, making the crime not only sexual and physical in nature but also deeply ideological. For these reasons, this case is documented as a religiously motivated hate crime against Hindus. The pattern of targeting, the religious coercion, and the use of power and violence to break the victim’s resistance all demonstrate that the intent was to attack and erase her Hindu identity. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that the report does not specify the exact date when the woman’s ordeal began.
