Hindu man murdered, mother injured by Muslim attackers during robbery in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district
Case Summary
In Gersa village of Sitapur region, Surguja, a Hindu man was brutally murdered and his mother severely injured in a targeted attack by a Muslim man named Mohammad Chand. According to reports, the accused, along with his accomplices, broke into the house of Raidu Nagvanshi, a member of the Nagvanshi Janjatiya Hindu community, intending to steal livestock. When Raidu and his mother, Tilaso Bai, tried to resist the theft and protect their animals, the intruders responded with extreme violence. Raidu was beaten to death with sticks and wooden planks, while his mother sustained serious injuries. After committing the assault, the assailants fled with the stolen livestock. Acting swiftly, police arrested the prime accused, Mohammad Chand, a 24-year-old habitual offender from Bimda village in Jashpur district. He has since been produced in court. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining accomplices who are currently absconding.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the Undecided database due to the absence of conclusive evidence pointing to a religious motive behind the crime. This could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as it has been observed in many cases where Muslim perpetrators have targeted Hindus for robberies and assaults due to their deep-rooted hostility toward Hindus and their faith. Furthermore, there is also growing concern over the increasing pattern of organised theft, violent crimes, and targeted attacks in remote Hindu-majority tribal regions, frequently perpetrated by Muslim criminals. However, this could very well be a crime of opportunity, where the victim was targeted simply because he was vulnerable and the accused believed he would be easier to rob. Nevertheless, this remains highly speculative, as the case details provide no clear indication of a religious motive. Moreover, the victim's mother has not made any statements suggesting that the attack was driven by communal or religious hostility. For this reason, the case has been added to the Undecided database. If further information emerges that indicates a religious motive behind the crime, it will be reviewed and classified accordingly under the Hate Crime database.
