Case Summary

In Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit Hindu minor girl was sexually molested by a Muslim shopkeeper named Naushad, which resulted in widespread outrage among the villagers. The incident occurred in the Safipur Kotwali area, where the minor girl had gone to a nearby shop to buy household items. The shopkeeper, a Muslim man named Nausaad, took advantage of the opportunity and sexually molested her inside the store. It has also been revealed that the accused was stalking the minor girl for some time, waiting for the right moment to commit the heinous act. Fortunately, some villagers witnessed the incident and recorded a video of it, which quickly spread on social media. The video triggered widespread outrage among the local residents and led to escalating communal tensions. The villagers caught hold of the perpetrator and physically assaulted him. The police arrived at the scene after receiving information and took control of the situation, in light of increased communal tensions. As of the date of writing this report, a case was registered by the police based on the complaint filed by the girl's mother. A search operation was underway to nab the accused, who was absconding. Furthermore, a large police force was also deployed in the village to prevent any further unrest and to maintain law and order.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the 'Undecided' database due to the absence of conclusive evidence pointing to a religious motive behind the crime. Although it has been observed in many similar cases where Muslim perpetrators consciously seek out Hindu girls, particularly minors, for religious conversion or sexual exploitation, due to underlying religious hostility and minors being more vulnerable. It was reported that the accused had been stalking the Hindu minor girl for some time, which may suggest premeditation and deliberate targeting. However, it cannot be stated beyond a reasonable doubt that the girl was targeted specifically because of her Hindu identity. It is equally possible that she was targeted because she was a minor and was alone at the time of the crime, indicating a possible crime of opportunity rather than one rooted in religious animosity. Furthermore, at the time of writing this report, there was no indication from the victim’s family or from the investigation so far that the girl was targeted specifically because of her religious identity. Nevertheless, this remains speculative, as the case details provide no clear indication of religious motivations. For this reason, the case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If further information emerges that hints towards a religiously motivated crime, then it would be reclassified and included under the Hate Crime database.
