Case Summary

In Jalaun, Uttar Pradesh, a minor Hindu girl was abducted, pressured for religious conversion and nikah by a Muslim youth named Sahil. Sahil had posed as a Hindu to entrap the minor victim. Furthermore, he also pressured her to consume beef, threatened and raped her when she refused conversion. According to the victim, the Muslim youth named Sahil befriended her by introducing himself as a Hindu man named Rohit. Gradually, they grew closer as they lived in the same locality. He lured and abducted her and took her to Hamirpur. When the victim came to know about the accused's real identity, the accused threatened her and tried to convert her religion. When she refused, the accused raped her. The accused took her to a maulvi for religious conversion and nikah. The maulvi pressured her to consume beef (cow meat), which she refused. Enraged, the maulvi refused to perform the nikah and shooed them away. The accused, along with his mother, Reshma, then took her to another location where they hired a lawyer to get the minor girl married, but to no avail. Then she was taken to Ahmedabad, from where she was rescued by the police. During all this time, the accused and his family members continued to mentally torture her and sexually exploit her, pressuring her for conversion and nikah. However, her ordeal didn't end. One of the police officers pressured her to give a statement in favour of the accused, that she wants to stay with him and marry him. The victim stated that, in the police station, she was not allowed to meet her family members; instead, the accused's mother was allowed access to her. Furthermore, the victim's family also stated that police did not conduct a medical examination of the victim and arrested the accused on minor charges, which makes getting bail easier. Due to this, the victim's family sat on a protest demanding medical examination of the victim and strict action against everyone involved, including the police officials.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of: - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within it, the sub-category selected is: - Forced conversion before marriage, with the tertiary category being: - Forced to eat beef and Forced to do nikah. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The second sub-category selected here is: - Man pretends to be Hindu, with the tertiary category being: - Name changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The third sub-category selected here is: - Assault or threatened upon refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces threats or assault after she refuses to convert and change her religious identity owing to pressure/force by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert to Islam and upon her refusal, assaults or threatens the victim. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the woman was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. The fourth sub-category selected here is: - Rape for refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces pressure/threats/violence to convert and change her religious identity by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressuring the Hindu woman to convert. In some of these cases, the association could be non-consensual as well or, the religious identity of the non-Muslim man could be previously unknown to the Hindu victim. As the case may be, in such cases, the non-Hindu man forces himself sexually on the Hindu woman when she refuses his advances and pressures to convert her religion. The rape of the woman is often seen as either a punishment for the woman refusing to convert. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The other sub-category selected is: - Brainwashed and/or groomed, with the tertiary category being: - Rape and sexual assault/harassment and Conversion of Minor. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytization, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. This case has been added to the tracker because a minor Hindu girl was lured, abducted, raped, pressured for religious conversion by a Muslim man, who posed as a Hindu to trap her. The accused deliberately concealed his religious identity to initiate and sustain a relationship with the minor Hindu girl. This itself is a clear manifestation of bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. By concealing his true identity, he exploited her trust, targeting her under false pretences. This indicates a premeditated intent to manipulate her based on her religious background. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal but can also be interpreted as an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs. One of the most severe aspects of the case is the forced consumption of beef—a direct assault on her religious beliefs. Here, this method was used not merely to shame or hurt the victim but to intentionally defile her religious beliefs so as to convert her. Forcing a Hindu to consume beef is not only a profound disrespect to their religious beliefs but also constitutes a religiously motivated hate crime. In Hinduism, cows are revered as sacred animals, symbolising life and sustenance, and the act of consuming beef is considered highly sacrilegious by many Hindus. Therefore, compelling a Hindu to eat beef goes beyond mere dietary imposition; it is an intentional violation of their religious principles and an assault on their cultural and spiritual identity. It qualifies as a deliberate act of defiling religious customs and constitutes a hate-driven attack on Hindu religious representation. Furthermore she was also, raped, mentally tortured and threatened for religious conversion by the accused and her family. Here the rape and mental torture were used as tools for religious conversion. This was an attempt to subjugate her to religious conversion by breaking her will and humiliating her. The kidnapping was also aimed at isolating her from her social circle and her Hindu community, so that she feels helpless and sees conversion as her only option. These actions stem from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime. It is important to note here that the victim was a minor and was incapable of providing informed consent to such conversion activities, especially when it's forced. It is a well-established fact that children are more susceptible to manipulation since they are still developing emotionally, cognitively, and socially. Their brains are not fully mature, making them more vulnerable. This case demonstrates a calculated strategy of targeting those who are less able to resist or understand the long-term implications of conversion, making it a significant case of religious-motivated hate crime. Such acts are not merely criminal in nature; they are ideologically charged, revealing religious prejudice and a calculated intent to alter the religious identity of a minor without her volition. The use of grooming, where trust is built only to exploit, is an insidious method that exploits the child’s naivety and dependence. It reveals a calculated ideological assault on the victim’s autonomy, dignity, and right to retain her religious identity. Disclaimer: According to media sources, the victim was abducted on May 14, 2025. However, there is no specific information available regarding when she first encountered the perpetrator. For the purposes of documentation, Hinduphobia Tracker has used May 14, 2025, as a reference point to mark the onset of her ordeal, as it is the earliest confirmed date. While media coverage of the incident emerged on June 27, 2025, the Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, not when it was reported.
