Case Summary

In the Jyoti Nagar area of Delhi, a 22-year-old Hindu woman named Neha was murdered by a Muslim man named Taufiq after she rejected his marriage proposal. Taufiq pushed Neha from the terrace of her building, resulting in her death. As per media reports, Taufiq, originally from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, worked in a shop on Mandoli Road in Delhi. Neha and her family had known Taufiq well for the past three years, with Neha and her sisters even tying him a Rakhi on Rakshabandhan. However, in recent months, Taufiq began pressuring Neha to marry him, a proposal which she firmly rejected. Neha’s sister said that Taufiq had been harassing Neha for over a month, persistently insisting on marriage and issuing threats. Just days before the incident, Neha had informed her mother about the ongoing harassment. In response to Taufiq’s relentless behaviour, Neha stopped speaking to him, which further enraged him. On the day of the incident, Taufiq entered Neha’s house disguised in a burqa. Neha’s father stated that when he confronted Taufiq, Taufiq pushed him aside and went straight to the terrace, where Neha was checking the water tank. Following this, a heated argument ensued between Neha and Taufiq, after which Taufiq pushed her off the building's terrace. Neha sustained severe injuries and was rushed to GTB Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries despite medical intervention. Neha’s family, including her father and sister, confirmed that Taufiq would constantly threaten and harass her for refusing his marriage proposal. The police were informed of the situation, and they registered a case against Taufiq, who had absconded after murdering Neha. The police launched a search operation and managed to arrest him in the Rampur district in Uttar Pradesh.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case raises serious suspicions as to whether the Hindu woman was murdered due to religious animosity on the part of the Muslim accused. The accused killed the woman after she refused his marriage proposal. There is a clear precedent for such incidents, where Hindu women have been murdered by Muslim men for rejecting relationships or marriage proposals. In many of these cases, marriage proposals come with the expectation that the marriage will be conducted according to the man’s religion. In Islamic marriages (Nikah), a non-Muslim woman is required to convert to Islam to marry a Muslim man. This raises legitimate concerns as to whether the victim in this case was also pressured to convert to Islam and marry the accused. Such acts are often carried out with the intent to convert Hindu women to Islam and exploit them. Such acts by Muslim perpetrators are rooted in deep-seated religious animosity towards the Hindu victim and her faith. However, in this particular case, there is no conclusive evidence indicating a religious motive behind the crime. Since there is no clear evidence of a religious motive in this case, and neither the reports nor the victim’s family have suggested one, it has been placed in the ‘Undecided’ category in the database. If any further information emerges indicating religious motivation as a factor, then this case will be reclassified under the hate crime database.
