Case Summary

In Mopati Bazaar, Sikarhatta (Bhojpur district, Bihar), a 50-year-old Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman was demolished before dawn by unidentified miscreants. During the incident, the temple idol was also desecrated. According to reports, the temple had been at the centre of a land dispute dating back to 1981, involving adjacent plots behind the temple premises. In the early hours, around 15 unknown individuals reportedly used two JCB machines to carry out the demolition. The temple priest, Sadhu Ji, recalled, “When I woke up to attend nature’s call, I saw about 15 people fleeing the site with two JCBs. I hid myself out of fear for my life.” He further explained that the land dispute, involving rival local claimants, had persisted for decades and may have triggered the destruction. Local villagers expressed outrage at the demolition and desecration. Debris from the temple lay scattered, and prasad was found strewn amidst the ruins. One villager remarked, “This is not just an attack on bricks and cement—it is an attack on our faith.” In protest, local Hindus blocked the Bihta–Piro road for several hours. The blockade was lifted only after district officials assured strict action against the culprits and pledged immediate reconstruction of the temple. A brief ritual, including coconut-breaking, was performed before laying the foundation stone. The ceremony was attended by MLA Vishal Prashant and former legislator Sunil Pandey. A five-member committee has been formed to oversee the reconstruction process, initiated by the administration. Police officials confirmed that an FIR has been registered, and the culprits may include either locals or external actors. Additional police forces have been deployed to maintain order. Sikarhatta SHO Sanoj Kumar stated, “The reconstruction has begun under police protection. The culprits will be arrested soon. The land dispute involves two rival parties over plots behind the temple, though the temple itself stood beside a government road.” Bhojpur SP Raj added, “We are examining CCTV footage to identify those responsible. Strict action will be taken against the accused.”

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. The sub-category selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. The other sub-category relevant in this case is- Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. This case has been added to the tracker as the perpetrators targeted a Hindu temple, an institution that holds immense spiritual importance in Hindu tradition. For Hindus, Temples are not mere physical structures; they are sanctified spaces believed to embody the divine presence of Hindu deities. Acts of violence against such spaces are not isolated incidents of destruction but reflect underlying hostility towards Hindu beliefs and identity. The attack also involves the deliberate desecration of Hindu religious symbols through the vandalism of the Hindu temple and the sacred idol of Lord Hanuman. In Hinduism, idols of Hindu deities are not just artistic representations but are deeply revered manifestations of the divine. Their desecration is seen as a direct affront to the religious sentiments of Hindus and an act of profound disrespect. Such acts of violence against Hindu temples are not just an attack on the temple property; it is an act of violence against the religious sentiments of the Hindu community that derives spiritual, cultural, and social meaning from that temple space. Since this attack was directed at both the Hindu temple and the temple idol of Lord Hanuman, it is classified as a religiously motivated hate crime against the Hindu community. In this case, although the miscreants were unknown, regardless, the action stemmed from hatred against the Hindu community and Hinduism. Since this case fits the parameters of a religiously motivated crime, therefore, it's being categorised under the hate crime database.
