Case Summary

In Kaliyun village of Jadera Panchayat, Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, a Hindu temple and its consecrated idols were set ablaze in an act of desecration by a Muslim youth. The incident occurred on the night of 6 March 2026, when a 12-year-old Muslim boy set fire to the ancient Jalpa Mata Temple. The temple, which holds religious significance for the local Hindu community, was targeted when the Muslim boy ignited a fire inside the premises. The flames damaged the idol of Goddess Jalpa Mata and burnt the sacred clothes and offerings placed before the deity. The act caused shock and anger among local residents, as the fire directly affected the sanctity of the temple and its religious objects. According to reports, villagers noticed the fire soon after it started and rushed to the temple. They made strenuous efforts to control the flames and eventually succeeded in bringing the fire under control. Their timely intervention prevented the blaze from spreading further and potentially destroying the entire temple complex. Had the villagers not acted quickly, the fire could have caused extensive structural damage to the temple. Following the incident, the Sadar Police Station in Chamba was informed about the incident. Considering the sensitivity of the situation, the station in-charge reached the spot late at night along with a police team and began collecting evidence from the scene. The police subsequently summoned the Muslim youth and his family to the police station for questioning. A case was registered against the accused and an investigation was initiated to examine all aspects of the incident. The incident generated widespread anger among local Hindu organisations and residents. Members of several Hindu groups, including Bajrang Dal, reached the Chamba police station on 7 March 2026 to register their protest and demand strict action. They emphasised that the act had hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindu community and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the temple being set on fire. Chamba Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar Saklani confirmed that a case had been registered in connection with the arson at the Jalpa Mata Temple and stated that the police were investigating every aspect of the incident. Authorities also appealed to the public to maintain peace and order in the area as the investigation continued. The incident left the atmosphere in Kaliyun village and nearby areas tense, with heightened concern among residents over the attack on the temple.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case is being added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. The subcategory selected is- Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. The other subcategory selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. This case has been added to the tracker as a religiously motivated hate crime because a Hindu temple was deliberately targeted and set on fire, resulting in the desecration of sacred religious symbols and objects central to Hindu faith. The ancient Jalpa Mata Temple was set ablaze, causing severe damage to the idol of Goddess Jalpa Mata and burning the sacred clothes and offerings placed before the deity. The temple as an institution holds immense spiritual importance in the Hindu faith. For Hindus, temples are not mere physical structures; they are sanctified spaces believed to embody the divine presence of Hindu deities. Setting fire to such a space represents a direct attack on the religious sanctity of the temple and the spiritual life of the Hindu community that venerates it. Furthermore, the burning of the consecrated idol and sacred cloth offerings inside the temple resulted in not only material damage but also deep emotional and spiritual distress to the devotees who revere the deity. In Hinduism, idols of Hindu deities are not just artistic representations but are deeply revered manifestations of the divine. Their desecration is seen as a direct affront to the religious sentiments of Hindus and an act of profound disrespect. Such acts of violence against Hindu temples and their idols are not just an attack on temple property; they are acts of violence against the religious beliefs of the Hindu community that derive spiritual, cultural, and social meaning from that temple space. For the local Hindu residents, the Jalpa Mata Temple functioned as an important centre of devotion and cultural continuity, where worship, rituals, and offerings formed part of everyday religious practice. Therefore, the psychological impact of such attacks is immense. Devotees who visit temples seek solace, peace, and a sense of connection with the divine. When these sacred temples are targeted and desecrated, it shatters the sense of security and belonging that the Hindu community derives from its religious institutions. The pain caused by the desecration of temple idols is not limited to physical damage; it is a wound to the collective psyche of the Hindu community. The act of igniting a fire inside the temple, which resulted in the burning of the idol and the destruction of offerings dedicated to the deity, demonstrates a deliberate violation of a sacred religious space. Such actions go beyond ordinary vandalism or property damage, as they specifically target objects of worship that hold profound religious significance for Hindus. By attacking the temple and the sacred objects within it, the perpetrator inflicted harm upon a symbol of Hindu faith and collective religious identity. Given that the act involved deliberately setting fire to a temple and damaging the idol of a Hindu goddess along with sacred ritual objects, the incident reflects targeted hostility towards a Hindu religious institution and its symbols. For these reasons, the case is categorised as a religiously motivated hate crime against the Hindu community, and thus has been added to the tracker.
