Hindu girl raped and forcibly converted by Muslim man posing as Hindu; victim held captive for 14 years, tortured and forced to eat beef
Case Summary
In the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu girl was lured, raped, and forcibly converted to Islam by a Muslim man named Munna Ansari, who pretended to be Hindu. She was tortured and forced to eat beef. The victim, originally from Aligarh, was studying at the Kalyan Karoti Institute in the Govind Nagar area of Mathura when she went missing in 2012. At the time, her family had filed a missing person report at the Govind Nagar police station after she disappeared while on her way to attend classes. For years, the family remained unaware of her whereabouts. In 2026, with the help of Hindu organisations, she returned to her family after 14 years and approached the police seeking justice for the prolonged ordeal she endured. After her return, the victim described her ordeal. She stated that while she was studying at the Kalyan Karoti Institute, she came into contact with a Muslim man named Munna Ansari, who befriended her by concealing his religious identity and presenting himself as a Hindu man. Through this deception, he lured her into a relationship and later abducted her while she was on her way to college. She was taken to Kishanganj in Bihar, where she was kept in captivity for several years. During this period, she was repeatedly drugged and subjected to sexual assault. She was also pressured to convert to Islam and was beaten when she refused to comply with the demands to adopt Islamic religious practices. The victim recounted that the accused broke the locket of Lord Ram that she wore and forced her to consume beef against her religious beliefs. She was also subjected to sustained physical and psychological abuse and lived under constant intimidation and threats. The victim further revealed that the accused misused her identity documents, including her Aadhaar card and PAN card, to fraudulently secure a bank loan of approximately ₹5 lakh in her name. She was also pressured to participate in illegal activities, including the drug trade and prostitution, and was threatened with death whenever she resisted his demands. During the prolonged captivity, she was also impregnated and forced into motherhood. The case came to light after the victim managed to establish contact through Facebook with individuals associated with the Maharana Pratap Sena (a Hindu organisation), including its national president Rajvardhan Singh and Supreme Court advocate Dr AP Singh. Following nearly a month of efforts by the organisation, the victim was rescued and brought back to Mathura. She was subsequently taken to the Govind Nagar police station, where she provided a detailed account of the abuse and demanded strict legal action against Munna Ansari. Upon receiving her statement, the police initiated an investigation into the matter. Officials stated that the previously registered missing person case from 2012 had been closed over time, but fresh proceedings were being initiated based on the woman’s complaint. Police began recording her statement and collecting evidence related to the accusations of kidnapping, rape, forced religious conversion, fraud, and prolonged captivity.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been documented under the selected primary category: Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Under this, the selected secondary category is: Man pretends to be Hindu. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malicious intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The other sub-category selected is - Brainwashed and/or groomed, with the tertiary category being - Rape and sexual assault/harassment, In our database, we have not added incidents where women have converted to another religion of their free will and no allegations of forced/involuntary conversion have been made. However, there are certain cases of conversion where the consent itself is a result of the brainwashing or grooming of a minor by the non-Hindu perpetrator trying to victimise a woman for her Hindu religious identity. The phenomenon of grooming points to non-Hindu perpetrators identifying their Hindu victims’ vulnerabilities and exploiting them over months and sometimes years, to extract the supposed ‘consent’ in order to convert their religion. In most cases of grooming, the victims are minors or the grooming started when the victim was a minor. In other cases of grooming, the non-Hindu perpetrator brainwashes and grooms a minor victim to extract their trust and then proceeds to rape them repeatedly with the intent of converting them to their faith. It is pertinent to understand here that when the victim is a minor, the ‘consent’ to convert or enter into a romantic relationship with an adult itself is redundant – addressed by POCSO. While every case of conversion of a minor and incidents of establishing a physical relationship with a minor by an adult is a crime, for the purpose of this database, a case would be considered a hate crime only if there is a distinct religious angle to the grooming. For example, in the UK, if a Hindu minor is targeted by Pakistani grooming gangs, it would be considered a hate crime because the victims are specifically targeted owing to their non-Muslim religious identity with the perpetrators being Muslim. In other cases, if a Hindu minor is brainwashed into entering a physical relationship with the non-Hindu adult perpetrator and the family alleges grooming/brainwashing of the minor to convert her religion, it would form a part of this database. If the victim is a Hindu adult, the case would form a part of this database only if the victim herself says that she was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. However, if the victim is deceased (murdered or otherwise), the case would form a part of this database if her family/friends provided testimony that the victim was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. Since these crimes have a distinct religious angle where the victim is being targeted owing to her Hindu religious identity, these cases are considered a hate crime. The other sub-category selected is - Assault or threat upon refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces threats or assault after she refuses to convert and change her religious identity owing to pressure/force by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert to Islam and upon her refusal, assaults or threatens the victim. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the woman was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. The other sub-category selected here is - Desecration of Hindu symbols in relationship. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces insult and desecration of her faith (Hinduism) and its symbol because of the inherent disregard for polytheism of the non-Hindu partner. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts desecrating the religious symbols of the Hindu partner out of spite for her faith. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The second primary category selected here is - Predatory Proselytisation. The subcategory selected is- Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes This case constituted a clear instance of a religiously motivated hate crime as a Hindu girl was lured, raped, and forcibly converted to Islam by a Muslim man named Munna Ansari, who pretended to be Hindu. Firstly, the perpetrator deliberately concealed his religious identity to initiate and sustain a relationship with a Hindu woman. This itself is a clear manifestation of bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. By concealing his true identity, he exploited her trust, targeting her under false pretences. This indicates a premeditated intent to manipulate her based on her religious background. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal but can also be interpreted as an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs. In such instances, identity concealment was not merely a deceptive tactic for personal gain but a calculated strategy rooted in religious profiling and targeting. The accused knew full well that the victim, as a Hindu minor, would refuse his advances if she learned his real identity, so he circumvented this by lying, a move that directly exposed his religiously driven intent. This deception reflected a larger, deeply troubling pattern where Hindu girls are specifically singled out using false identities by Muslim men, often with coercion, elopement, or conversion in mind. Such targeted victimisation based on religion demonstrated not just a fundamental disregard for Hinduism but exposed a profound animosity towards Hindus and their cherished beliefs. Secondly, after luring her into a relationship, he drugged her, abducted her and took her to Kishanganj, where he held her captive. During this time, he repeatedly sexually exploited her and physically assaulted her, forcing her into the drug trade and prostitution. These exploitations were not random acts of crime; rather, they functioned as religiously motivated tools aimed at humiliating and dominating a Hindu girl because of her faith. The target was not the victim as an individual, but her Hindu identity, as he also pressured her for conversion. Thirdly, the accused also pressured her to convert to Islam with demands to adopt Islamic religious practices. Coercing a Hindu individual to abandon her faith under threats and intimidation constituted a direct attack on her religious identity and dignity. It was not a matter of personal choice; it was coercion rooted in hostility towards the victim's Hindu identity. Such an attempt reflects religious animosity because the act is not simply about personal differences but about erasing the victim’s Hindu faith, making it a religiously motivated crime. Often in such cases, sexual violence or torture serves a dual purpose: physical subjugation and religious humiliation. The intention was to break the victim down, emotionally, physically, and spiritually, so that she could be converted. This was not random violence; it was systematic, targeted, and rooted in religious animosity. Fourth, when she refused to convert, she was brutally assaulted and beaten by the accused. The violence followed her refusal to convert and submit to the demands of the accused to adopt Islamic religious practices. The assault, therefore, did not occur in a vacuum; it followed directly from her resistance to religious coercion. The attack was rooted in hostility towards her refusal to abandon her Hindu identity and was aimed at forcing compliance through fear and physical harm. Such violence functioned as punishment for non-conformity and as a tool to break her will, underscoring its religiously motivated character. Fifth, the victim also revealed she was forced to eat beef by the accused, an act that is prohibited in Hinduism, as the cow is considered sacred. Forcing her to consume beef was a deliberate attempt to dishonour her religion and humiliate her. This was not only sacrilegious but also a further tactic to weaken her attachment to her faith and force her towards conversion. Such acts have a precedent in history, where Hindu victims were forcibly fed beef by Muslim extremists to desecrate their beliefs and push them towards abandoning their Hindu faith. In this case, the force feeding of beef was both an act of grave religious violation and an instrument in attempted forced conversion, shaped by hostility towards the Hindu victim and her faith, rendering this, unequivocally, a religiously motivated hate crime. Sixth, the act of breaking and discarding the locket of Lord Ram worn by the victim served as a symbolic attempt to erase her Hindu identity. Lord Ram is one of the most revered deities in Hinduism, and devotional items such as lockets bearing his image are deeply significant markers of faith and spiritual devotion for many Hindus. Forcibly removing and destroying the locket, while simultaneously pressuring to adopt Islamic religious practices was therefore not merely an act of personal humiliation, but a deliberate attempt to strip the victim of a visible expression of her religious identity. Such an act reflected hostility and contempt towards her Hindu beliefs while simultaneously asserting control over her personal and spiritual autonomy. By discarding the sacred symbol she carried, the accused sought to sever her connection with her faith and cultural roots, signalling an effort to erase markers of her Hindu identity and impose religious domination over her life. Taken together, these actions demonstrate a consistent pattern of coercion, religious humiliation, and attempts at erasing the victim’s Hindu identity. The concealment of the accused’s religious identity, the coercion to abandon her faith, the violence inflicted when she resisted, the forced consumption of beef, and the destruction of the Lord Ram locket all pointed towards a deliberate effort to break her religious identity and impose religious domination over her. Such actions stem from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Such acts were not merely personal crimes; they were rooted in a desire to dominate and erase the religious identity of the victim. Since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime.
