Hindu woman lured into love affair, subjected to rape and casteist slurs by Muslim men in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
In Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu woman from the Dalit community was lured into a love trap by two Muslim men. She was then raped for almost seven months and simultaneously subjected to caste-based slurs by the accused. One of the accomplices of the perpetrators, a Muslim man, also subjected the victim to casteist slurs and supported the Muslim perpetrators in their crime. The victim's family received death threats, and the victim was also subjected to financial exploitation by the Muslim men. This came to light when the victim, a resident of the Chandinagar area of Baghpat, filed a complaint on 20th February 2026 against the two Muslim men for raping her repeatedly over a period of seven months. She submitted a complaint at the office of the Superintendent of Police, after which the police began an investigation into the matter. In her complaint, the woman said that two Muslim men lured her into a love trap and sexually assaulted her multiple times during these seven months. She also stated that the accused used caste-based slurs against her. Additionally, she named another Muslim person, Javed, who used casteist language and pressured her to settle the matter. The victim stated that the accused recorded an obscene video of her. They exploited her further by threatening to release it online. She was robbed of over 165,000 rupees and her gold earrings. This was not the first time she spoke up against these two Muslim men. Earlier, she had complained that they showed up at her home with a country-made pistol, demanding jewellery and threatening to kill her brother and family. Police registered that case at the time and started investigating it. Just two days after that first report, she came forward again, this time criticising the police too. She said they twisted her original complaint. Based on her fresh statement, the police began investigating every angle of the case. Circle Officer Rohan Chaurasia said a thorough investigation is underway, and appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case is being added to the tracker under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships or other sexual crimes. The subcategory selected is- Brainwashed and/or Groomed. The tertiary category selected is- Rape and sexual assault/harassment. In our database, we have not added incidents where women have converted to another religion of their free will and no allegations of forced/involuntary conversion have been made. However, there are certain cases of conversion where the consent itself is a result of the brainwashing or grooming of a minor by the non-Hindu perpetrator trying to victimise a woman for her Hindu religious identity. The phenomenon of grooming points to non-Hindu perpetrators identifying their Hindu victims’ vulnerabilities and exploiting them over months and sometimes years, to extract the supposed ‘consent’ in order to convert their religion. In most cases of grooming, the victims are minors or the grooming started when the victim was a minor. In other cases of grooming, the non-Hindu perpetrator brainwashes and grooms a minor victim to extract their trust and then proceeds to rape them repeatedly with the intent of converting them to their faith. It is pertinent to understand here that when the victim is a minor, the ‘consent’ to convert or enter into a romantic relationship with an adult itself is redundant – addressed by POCSO. While every case of conversion of a minor and incidents of establishing a physical relationship with a minor by an adult is a crime, for the purpose of this database, a case would be considered a hate crime only if there is a distinct religious angle to the grooming. For example, in the UK, if a Hindu minor is targeted by Pakistani grooming gangs, it would be considered a hate crime because the victims are specifically targeted owing to their non-Muslim religious identity with the perpetrators being Muslim. In other cases, if a Hindu minor is brainwashed into entering a physical relationship with the non-Hindu adult perpetrator and the family alleges grooming/brainwashing of the minor to convert her religion, it would form a part of this database. If the victim is a Hindu adult, the case would form a part of this database only if the victim herself says that she was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. However, if the victim is deceased (murdered or otherwise), the case would form a part of this database if her family/friends provided testimony that the victim was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. Since these crimes have a distinct religious angle where the victim is being targeted owing to her Hindu religious identity, these cases are considered a hate crime. Another primary category selected is- Attack not resulting in death. The subcategory selected is- Attacked for Hindu identity. In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime under this category. Another primary category selected is- Hate Speech against Hindus. The subcategory selected is- Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. This case exemplifies a religiously motivated hate crime, as a Hindu woman from the Dalit community suffered targeted predation when two Muslim men lured her into a relationship after religiously profiling her. They subjected her to repeated rape over a prolonged period of seven months alongside caste-based slurs, revealing a deliberate intent to degrade her rooted in her Hindu identity. The attackers exploited her faith as the entry point for their violence, transforming a deceptive romance into systematic sexual assault and verbal humiliation that struck at the core of her religious and social existence. Alluring this Hindu woman into a love-trap and then subjecting her to rape and casteist slurs underscores the religiously motivated essence of the crime. While some might contend that the caste-specific slurs targeted her Dalit micro-identity rather than her broader Hindu faith, this overlooks a fundamental truth about Abrahamic religious dynamics: micro-identities such as caste, region, or language remain secondary to overarching religious allegiance and animosity. Here, the Muslim perpetrators hurled caste-based abuse precisely because she embodied Hinduism, channelling their animosity through slurs that weaponised her faith against her. This pattern confirms that their hatred stemmed not from her caste identity, but from her religious identity as a Hindu, making the assault a calculated act of faith-driven hostility. The caste-based slurs directed at the victim further illuminate how the perpetrators zeroed in on her religious identity, fuelling their animosity towards her faith-based existence. Luring a Hindu woman into a relationship for the sole purpose of prolonged rape and sexual exploitation exposes the perpetrators' profound contempt for her as a Hindu. Far from mere sexual gratification, the rape served to humiliate and dominate her because of her religious identity; the accompanying casteist abuse cements this link, proving that religious hatred propelled the sexual violence. Such religiously motivated sexual violence against a Hindu woman for her faith renders this a stark hate crime. The perpetrators' use of casteist slurs constituted hate speech explicitly targeting the victim's religious identity as a Hindu. By invoking these slurs, they weaponised language rooted in Hindu social structures to inflict profound emotional and spiritual harm, wounding her religious sentiments and asserting dominance over her faith. This verbal assault revealed naked hatred for her Hindu identity, amplifying the crime's intent to dehumanise and humiliate her solely for who she is. Targeting a Hindu woman for such brutal, extended sexual violation lays bare the perpetrators' deep contempt for Hinduism and the Hindu community at large. Acts that single out women from a specific faith for degradation solely due to their community identity, as seen here with her Hindu background, mark this as an unambiguous, religiously motivated hate crime. Furthermore, the perpetrators escalated their religiously motivated assault by threatening the victim's family with a country-made pistol during an intrusion into her home and by financially exploiting the woman herself. They robbed her of more than 165,000 rupees and her gold earrings, compounding the rape and casteist slurs with economic coercion that stripped her of her dignity and resources. This brazen financial predation, alongside the armed intimidation of her loved ones, exposes their utter lack of any genuine romantic intent; instead, they dehumanised this Hindu woman, reducing her to a mere instrument for sexual violation, religious hatred, and monetary gain. Such multifaceted exploitation amplifies the severity of this hate crime, cementing its status as a deliberate attack driven by contempt for her Hindu identity. All this information warrants this case's firm inclusion in the Hinduphobia Tracker's hate crime database, ensuring accountability for faith-based persecution. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incident dates based on when the crime occurred, rather than when the media reports it. In this case, media reports do not specify the exact date when the victim's ordeal began; they only mention the date when the complaint was filed, 20th February 2026. Therefore, this date is recorded as the indicative incident date for documentation purposes only. In this case, although the two Muslim perpetrators gang-raped the victim, the third perpetrator, Javed, also participated by degrading her Hindu identity through casteist slurs. The perpetrator count is therefore recorded as three.
