Hindu woman forcibly abducted, raped and coerced to convert to Islam by Muslim man in Nainital
Case Summary
In Nainital, Uttarakhand, a 19-year-old Hindu woman was abducted, raped, held hostage and coerced to convert to Islam by a Muslim man named Suhail. This incident came to light when the woman's father filed a complaint against the Muslim man at the Bhawali police station on 15 February 2026. According to the complaint, the woman had been missing for the past three months (November 2025). The victim's father reported that Suhail, a resident of the Garampani area who ran a salon, had lured their daughter, kidnapped her, and taken her to Bijnor. The victim's mother stated that she had received a call from her daughter, in which she complained of being forcibly taken away, beaten and forced to convert to Islam. Given the seriousness of the matter, BJP workers Bhavna Mehra and Manoj Bhatt, along with the woman's family, reached the Bhawali police station and demanded immediate action against the accused. Acting on the complaint, the police, along with their teams, started an investigation. Subsequently, the police safely recovered the girl from Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh and then arrested Suhail at the Delhi-Bijnor border. A case was registered against the accused under sections of kidnapping and rape, and he was sent to jail after being presented in the court.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category in this case is: Predatory Proselytisation. The subcategory under this is: Proselytisation by grooming, brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination. The tertiary categories selected under this are: Family claims grooming, Rape and sexual assault/harassment. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting, regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust that might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to the existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytisation, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. The other subcategory selected is- Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds, which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision, etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. Such cases, where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion, are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. This case stands as a blatant hate crime fuelled by religious animosity, where a Muslim man forcibly abducted a young Hindu woman, raped her, and coerced her into converting to Islam. The victim's Hindu identity made her the target, turning abduction and assault into tools of faith-based hatred. Such calculated brutality exposed the perpetrator's profound contempt for Hinduism, robbing the woman of her religious dignity. First, the act of luring and forcibly abducting the Hindu woman from her loving family, taking her away against her will, and holding her captive as a hostage for three agonising months while relentlessly forcing her to convert to Islam amounted to a clear instance of religiously motivated hate crime. Ripped from the warmth and security of her home and familial bonds, she endured not gentle persuasion or genuine conviction but sustained external coercion and psychological pressure to compel her to renounce her lifelong Hindu faith. This premeditated chain of abduction, prolonged captivity, and aggressive attempted conversion brazenly violated her sacred religious autonomy and personal dignity, laying bare the deep-seated animosity the perpetrator harboured specifically towards her Hindu identity and the Hindu way of life, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. Furthermore, raping and assaulting the victim repeatedly during this three-month ordeal revealed the perpetrator's profound religious hatred towards her as a Hindu woman. These brutal assaults served not just sexual gratification but aimed to desecrate her religious identity, shatter her unyielding spirit, publicly humiliate her purity as defined by Hindu values, and ultimately compel her submission through conversion to Islam. This pattern of sexual violence, inflicted with clear intent to degrade her faith and erase her Hindu essence, marked it as religiously motivated predation, transforming a grave crime into a stark hate crime against her religious identity. The court's decision to remand the accused to jail after production affirmed the validity of the parents' complaint and the harrowing truth of the victim's ordeal. This judicial action confirmed that Suhail had forcibly abducted the young Hindu woman, raped and physically assaulted her, and coerced her conversion to Islam, stripping her of her religious identity through calculated brutality. Such validation underscores the religiously motivated hate crime at the heart of this case, where the perpetrator's actions targeted her Hindu faith with venomous intent. Such forced conversion activities stem from deep-seated animosity towards the victim's original Hindu identity, as Abrahamic religions like Islam harbour doctrinal hatred towards non-adherents until they convert. This ideological contempt rooted in Islamic theology drove the assault on the Hindu victim due to her faith identity. Therefore, this case is being added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incidents based on when an event occurred or when the victim's ordeal began, rather than when the media reports the incident. This clarification matters because media sources covering this case noted the girl went missing three months earlier, with the earliest media report published on 14 February 2026. Therefore, 14 November 2025 serves as the indicative date for documenting the start of the victim's ordeal.
