Case Summary

In the Takhatpur area of Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, derogatory social media posts targeting Hindu deities and the tribal Hindu community were made by a man named Suraj Bharti. According to Takhatpur police station in-charge Vivek Pandey, Suraj Bharti, a resident of Nagaui village, frequently posted objectionable comments about the government and Hindu society on social media. Recently, he shared a post containing offensive remarks about Hindu gods and goddesses. As soon as the post surfaced, activists from Hindu organisations became angry and filed a complaint at the police station. The police took the matter seriously and filed a case under sections relating to inciting religious sentiments. The investigation revealed that the accused had also written about not receiving benefits from government schemes in his post. He also made objectionable comments about Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai and the tribal Hindu community. Representatives of the tribal community then filed a separate complaint regarding this. The police detained the accused, Suraj Bharti, and interrogated him. He was then produced in court, where he was ordered to be sent to jail.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category in this case is "Hate speech against Hindus". The sub-category that this case qualifies for is "Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith". Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. This case stood as a clear instance of religiously motivated hate speech, where the perpetrator denigrated sacred Hindu deities and hurled offensive remarks at the tribal Hindu community. Suraj Bharti's posts deliberately mocked figures millions revere daily, ripping at the heart of Hindu devotion with calculated cruelty. Hindu families who bow before these gods in prayer felt the raw sting of such public scorn, exposing deep religious animosity masked as online rants. It is first important to highlight that Hindu gods and goddesses hold a vital place in Hinduism; they embody profound theological, cultural, and spiritual significance, representing cosmic orders like righteousness, karma, and devotion. They serve as archetypes of moral guidance, protection, prosperity, and ultimate liberation. For Hindu devotees, any act of denigrating Hindu gods and goddesses in this derogatory manner amounted to a clear instance of a religiously motivated crime. The accused's actions in this case, making derogatory remarks against Hindu gods and goddesses, showcased the hatred he harboured towards Hinduism and the Hindu community. Such acts were deliberately designed to wound the religious sentiments of the Hindu community, unequivocally marking them as a religiously motivated crime. The perpetrator extended his venom to the tribal Hindu community, whose ancient traditions weave faith with nature's rhythms. By scorning these tribal Hindus, who honour the same deities through forest rituals and village shrines, Bharti revealed hatred for Hindus in all forms. This dual verbal attack signalled not fleeting anger but profound contempt for Hindu identity, marking every slur as religiously fuelled hate speech. Recently, social media has become a safe haven for anti-Hindu individuals, allowing for the posting of Hinduphobic content such as memes, posts, and comments targeting Hindu deities, religious symbols, scriptures, and members of the Hindu community, including Hindu scholars. This proliferation of online Hinduphobia represented a clear affront to the religious sentiments of Hindus, amounting to repeated and targeted anti-Hindu offences. Given that this case met all the parameters of religiously motivated hate speech, it was included in the Hate Crime Database maintained by the Hinduphobia Tracker.
