Case Summary

In Cary, North Carolina, United States, a Hindu temple named Sri Venkateswara Temple was vandalised and a sacred idol of Dvarpalaka (sacred guardian deity) was desecrated by a group of five unidentified miscreants on 18 January 2026. According to reports, the miscreants entered the temple at 3 am and vandalised it. They even desecrated one of the Dvarapalakas idols near the Raja Gopuram entrance. Surveillance cameras at the temple captured a group of at least five individuals approaching the premises. The footage, which had since been reviewed by the Cary Police Department, showed these individuals running toward a small sedan before hastily leaving the area. The urgency of their escape, caught on camera, suggested a level of premeditation that left investigators determined to uncover both the motive and the identities behind the act. Shortly after the accused fled, temple staff and worshippers discovered that the Dvarapalaka statue had been severely damaged. The temple authorities reported this immediately to the Cary Police Department, which reviewed surveillance footage. Authorities also indicated that the spiritual sanctity of the temple was not affected, and restoration of the damaged statue was carried out in accordance with traditional agamic practices. Hindu advocacy organisations condemned the incident and called on law enforcement to examine the vandalism. The Hindu American Foundation said in a post on X that the act was “not ‘just vandalism’” but “an attack on a religious community,” urging a thorough investigation and warning that “silence and minimisation only emboldened more attacks.” HinduPACT’s American Hindus Against Defamation described the damage to the “sacred place of worship” as “abhorrent” and demanded that those responsible be “apprehended and prosecuted for this hate crime.” The group also offered assistance to the temple and its community, tagging local police and Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel in its outreach. Both organisations said the incident should be viewed as more than isolated property damage, arguing that it reflected broader concerns about the safety of Hindu places of worship in the United States and warranted scrutiny of any potential bias-driven motive. Following this, the police took this case and began an investigation, attempting to catch hold of the miscreants. As of the time of writing this report, the police had not made any arrests.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case is being added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. The subcategory selected is- Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. The other subcategory selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. This incident at Sri Venkateswara Temple in North Carolina constitutes a clear case of a hate crime. A group of five unidentified individuals specifically targeted a Hindu place of worship. The perpetrators vandalised the temple and desecrated the sacred dvarpalaka idol. For Hindus, temples occupy a central, revered position in their faith. They function as sacred abodes where deities reside in manifested form, fostering devotion, rituals, and communal bonds. Structures like Sri Venkateswara Temple, with its Raja Gopuram and guardian statues, embody divine protection and cultural heritage. They draw worshippers for puja and festivals. In this context, such vandalism and attacks on temples showcase religious animosity. They violate the inviolable sanctity of these sacred spaces, aiming to demoralise and alienate an entire community from their spiritual lifeline. Such targeted attacks on Hindu temples reveal the deep animosity towards Hinduism that the perpetrators held, making it a hate crime. The desecration of the dvarpalaka idol, sacred guardian deities flanking temple entrances, strikes at a profound religious symbol. These fierce yet protective figures represent the threshold between the mundane and divine. They ward off evil and welcome the faithful. In Hindu theology, damaging such an idol equates to assaulting the deity's vigilant presence. This constitutes a grave sacrilege that pollutes the temple's aura and demands ritual purification under agamic traditions. Such assaults on Hindu sacred symbols deeply wound the faith of Hindus and constitute acts fuelled by religious bigotry. Such desecration inflicts deep hurt on religious sentiments and evokes visceral pain among Hindus who view idols as conduits of the divine, not inert objects. The emotional trauma ripples through the community. It shatters trust in safe worship and ignites fears of persecution. This deliberate wound to the Hindu faith underscores the hate crime's intent to humiliate and provoke lasting psychological distress. In this case, even though the perpetrators' identities remain unknown, the act is clearly motivated by religious animosity. Therefore, this case has been added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
