Minor Hindu girl brainwashed, abducted and pressured for religious conversion by Muslim man in Belgaum, Karnataka

Case Summary
In the Athani town of Belgaum district, Karnataka, a minor Hindu girl was brianwashed, abducted and pressured for religious conversion by a Muslim man named Mohammed Sahil. According to reports, the accused came into contact with the victim, who studied in Class 12, through a relative of the girl. Over time, he developed a close friendship with the minor victim, gradually gaining her trust before isolating her from her family and influencing her decisions. He lured her into a relationship under the pretext of love and marriage. The victim's parents stated that the accused lured the girl by suggesting they ‘go around’ and then abducted her on 11 January 2026. He took her to Bengaluru, where he pressured her to convert to Islam as a condition for the proposed marriage. Investigations revealed that the accused was planning to marry her after she turned 18 on 28 January 2026. During this time, he repeatedly told her that “Bharat will soon become a Muslim nation” and insisted that conversion was necessary for her future with him. Meanwhile, the victim's parents filed a complaint with the Athani police station about the abduction of their daughter. Based on the complaint, a special police team tracked the victim's movements and located her in Bengaluru. They managed to rescue her safely and arrested the accused, Mohammed Sahil. A case was registered against the accused under the charges of forced abduction and the POCSO Act, and the accused was sent to judicial custody. Furthermore, Iqbal Aminsab Sheikh and two others, Sridhar Pattar and Rohit Santosh Khadri, were also arrested for helping the accused.

Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. While every case of conversion of a minor and incidents of establishing a physical relationship with a minor by an adult is a crime, for the purpose of this database, a case would be considered a hate crime only if there is a distinct religious angle to the grooming. The intention was to break the victim down, emotionally, physically, and spiritually, so that she could be converted. This was not random; it was systematic, targeted, and rooted in religious animosity. Thirdly, the accused also pressured the victim to renounce her religion and convert to Islam. Pressuring a Hindu individual to discard her religious faith and embrace another was a direct attack on her religious identity and dignity. It was not a matter of personal choice; it was coercion rooted in hostility towards the victim's Hindu identity. Such an attempt reflects religious animosity because the act was not simply about personal differences but about erasing the victim’s Hindu faith, making it a religiously motivated crime. Such actions stem from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Therefore, religious conversions, even of minors, are often seen as a badge of honour, totally disregarding the methods used to achieve it. Since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime. Disclaimer: In this case, for documentation purposes, the religion of the perpetrators has been recorded as Muslim since the primary accused, Mohammed Sahil, is confirmed to be Muslim. The religious identity of the two accused, Sridhar Pattar and Rohit Santosh Khadri, has not been independently verified at the time of documentation.
