Case Summary

In Madhya Pradesh, a Hindu transgender woman named Kinnar Mona Ahirwar, a resident of Itwari Tori, committed suicide by hanging herself in the Mundepur area of Pili in Tikamgarh district on 13 January 2026. After her suicide, Rani Thakur, another Hindu transgender woman, revealed that the victim committed suicide after being forced to convert to Islam and eat beef by her guru, a Muslim transgender woman named Kiran Nayak, alias Kaleem Khan. According to reports, in an application filed at the Moti Nagar police station, Rani said that Guru Kiran, alias Kaleem Khan, along with accomplices Naina and two men, Milan Raja and Santu Dholak, pressured her and other Hindu transgenders to convert to Islam and eat beef, and even physically assaulted them if they resisted. She stated that Mona committed suicide due to this pressure. Rani also stated that the Muslim perpetrators prohibited her from visiting temples and beat her if she resisted, video recordings of which she had. Rani stated that Mona faced similar pressure, leading her to take the extreme step of suicide. She also suspected that Mona might have been murdered by the perpetrators. Following the revelations about Mona's suicide, a large number of Hindu transgender people and members of the Hindu community and organisations visited the Moti Nagar police station. They demanded immediate action in the case. The accused Kiran Nayak alias Kaleem Khan denied the allegations, claiming, "Mona had been living with me for six years. She had gone to her parents' home just yesterday. I do not know why she committed suicide. Rani's allegations were baseless; she herself had come here only two years ago. She was a drinker and drug user, and I hired her after obtaining a written application from the court. She wants to have a home and become a guru, so she made these allegations." The police in this matter stated that the complaint from the Hindu transgender individuals had been received and that further investigation was ongoing.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category selected in this case is- Predatory Proselytisation. The subcategory selected is- Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. The other subcategory selected is- Suicide after pressure to convert. When there is pressure, threat or coercion employed upon the Hindu victim to convert to a different religion, in several cases, owing to the humiliation or pressure/threat, the victim commits suicide. In such cases, the pressure/threat/intimidation/coercion/violence itself is driven by animosity towards the victim’s Hindu faith. The pressure/threat that is employed leads to the Hindu victim taking his own life. Since the victim’s faith is at the heart of the pressure to convert and the ensuing suicide by the victim, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. Another primary category selected is- Attack resulting in death. The subcategory selected is- Attacked for refusal to convert. When pressure, threats, or coercion are employed upon a Hindu victim to convert to another religion, in several cases the victim refuses to succumb. Once the victim resists, the perpetrator proceeds to attack the victim due to this refusal to convert. In such instances, the pressure, intimidation, and violence are clearly driven by hostility toward the victim’s Hindu faith. The attack then becomes an expression of that same hate, motivated by the victim’s refusal to abandon Hinduism and embrace the religion of the non-Hindu perpetrator. Since the victim’s faith is central to both the coercion and the subsequent attack, such cases are categorised as religiously motivated hate crimes. This case constitutes a clear instance of a religiously motivated hate crime, as the Muslim perpetrator and her accomplices forced the Hindu transgender victim Mona Ahirwar, along with Rani Thakur and other Hindu transgenders, to convert to Islam. Forcing Hindus to change their faith and convert to another amounted to a clear violation of their religious autonomy and fundamental rights to freely practise their religion. Such forced conversions violated the sacred religious beliefs and practices of Hindus, undermined and disrespected the Hindu faith, and showcased the deep-seated animosity the perpetrators held towards the Hindu victims due to their religious identity. The use of coercion and force to convert someone strips victims of their dignity, faith, and religious autonomy, amounting to a clear religiously motivated hate crime. Following this, forcing Hindu individuals to eat beef amounted to a complete violation and desecration of their faith and identity, as the cow is considered a sacred animal in Hinduism. The act by the Muslim perpetrators in this case to force the Hindu victims to eat beef constituted a clear violation of their religious rights and autonomy. It is also important to note that historically, Islamic invaders in India used this force-feeding of beef technique to desecrate Hindu temples and forcibly convert Hindus to Islam. The fact that the accused in this case used the same method to desecrate the Hindu individuals' faith and convert them to Islam showcased deep-seated religious animosity towards the victims due to their faith identity, making it a religiously motivated crime. One of the victims, the deceased Mona Ahirwar, endured such intense trauma and pressure to convert and eat beef that she committed suicide. Forcing someone to convert to another faith to the extent that they took their own life showcased the intensity and severity of the harassment and oppression Mona faced at the hands of the Muslim perpetrators. This also showcased the depth of hostility the perpetrators held towards Hindus. Hence, this elevated the severity of the hate crime, rooted in anti-Hindu hostility. The surviving victim, Rani Thakur, stated that the perpetrators beat transgender victims Mona and herself to compel conversion to Islam, escalating to brutal assaults whenever they resisted. This willingness to inflict physical violence on Hindu individuals solely for rejecting Islam exposed the perpetrators' ruthless determination to impose their faith by any means. Such targeted intimidation amounted to a clear religiously motivated hate crime, designed to instil fear across the Hindu transgender community. Rani also stated that the Muslim perpetrator prevented her from going to temples and beat her for it. Preventing a Hindu victim from visiting temples, a core part of her religious faith, and brutally physically assaulting her for wanting to practise it, showcased the animosity the perpetrators held towards Rani's Hindu identity. This act demonstrates that the Muslim perpetrator and her accomplices wanted to cross every limit and were ready to apply any means to completely break the Hindu victims from their faith and convert them to Islam, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In summary, the act of forcing Hindu individuals to convert to Islam, compelling them to eat beef, pressuring a Hindu individual so much that she committed suicide, preventing another Hindu individual from visiting temples and assaulting her when she refused—all of this combined to make it a clear case of predatory proselytisation. Henceforth, this case was added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records the dates of incidents based on when the crime occurred rather than when it was reported by the media. However, media reports in this case have not specified the exact date when the victim's ordeal began, that is, when she was first pressured for forceful conversion; henceforth, the date when she committed suicide, 13 January 2026, is selected as the indicative date of the incident. This is recorded for documentation purposes only. In this case, the deceased victim, Mona, committed suicide in the Tikamgarh district. Henceforth, Tikamgarh is selected as the location of the incident. Seeing the case details, even Rani the another Hindu transgender woman, was also equally pressured to convert to Islam. Henceforth, both of them are considered as victims, and the victim count is recorded as 2. In this case, even though the main perpetrator was Kiran Nayak alias Kaleem Khan, her accomplices Naina, Milan Raja and Santu Dholak were also part of her crime; henceforth, the perpetrator count was selected as four (4). While this tracker acknowledges that four individuals are named as accused in this case, for documentation purposes, the religion of the perpetrators is recorded as Muslim since the primary accused, Kiran Nayak alias Kaleem Khan, is confirmed to be Muslim. The religious identity of the accomplices Naina, Milan Raja, and Santu Dholak has not been independently verified at the time of documentation. However, given that they are also complicit in the acts of coercion, intimidation, forced beef consumption, and conversion pressure directed toward the Hindu transgender victims Mona Ahirwar and Rani Thakur, the case is recorded under a single perpetrator religion for consistency in categorisation. This approach ensures clarity in data representation without overlooking the involvement of other accused individuals.
