Case Summary

In the Shobhavpur village of Rae Bareli district, Uttar Pradesh, Hindu religious sentiments were insulted after a man named Amrik Singh posted derogatory remarks against Hinduism. According to reports, the accused, Amrik Singh, posted indecent and derogatory remarks targeting Hinduism and Sanatana Dharma on social media, in the context of a discussion related to Bangladesh. His comments drew strong objections, triggering outrage within the local Hindu community. Subsequently, members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad reached the Lalganj police station and submitted a formal complaint, stating that a Facebook account operating under the name “Amrik Singh” was repeatedly posting insulting and offensive content directed at Hindu beliefs for several days. They also informed the police that the accused worked at an enterprise company and the offensive posts were made at the behest of a Muslim youth. The police, in a swift action, registered the complaint and arrested the accused. The investigation regarding his digital activity, the circumstances surrounding the posts, and the involvement of other individuals connected to the incident was ongoing.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case is being added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. The subcategory selected is- Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. This case has been added to the tracker because the accused, Amrik Singh, posted derogatory and abusive remarks targeting Hinduism and Sanatana Dharma, thereby injuring the religious sentiments of the Hindu community. Although the comments were not publicly available at the time of writing this report, the fact that he was arrested for statements that hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community demonstrates the severity and nature of what he wrote. Hinduism, Sanatana Dharma and its deities hold an immensely sacred and revered position for Hindus, forming the core of their spiritual, cultural, and civilisational identity. By persistently using offensive language against the Hindu faith, the accused demonstrated clear religious hostility towards Hinduism and its followers. Such conduct went beyond casual expression and amounted to deliberate public denigration of a faith, contributing to hostility and social disharmony. The act therefore constituted a religiously motivated offence, intended to offend, provoke, and spread contempt towards Hindu beliefs and the Hindu community. Furthermore, the Hindu activists stated that the comments were made in the context of Bangladesh, which further aggravates the gravity of the offence. It is important to understand that Hindus in Bangladesh have been undergoing sustained religious persecution. A fresh wave of anti-Hindu violence had prevailed across Bangladesh following the death of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi. This escalation occurred against the backdrop of sustained anti-Hindu persecution that had continued since the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024. In the aftermath of Hadi’s death, Hindu neighbourhoods were selectively targeted by Muslim mobs, homes were set on fire, families were forced to flee, and many were rendered homeless. The violence followed a clear pattern of targeting Hindu properties, religious symbols, and individuals with impunity. Among the victims was a Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, who was brutally lynched by a Muslim mob over false allegations of blasphemy, illustrating the extreme vulnerability of the Hindu minority amid rising communal hostility. Public displays of posters and written material calling for the extermination of Hindus further reflected the normalisation of genocidal rhetoric alongside physical violence, arson, and vandalism. Against this backdrop of documented persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh, the accused’s online remarks mocking or abusing Hinduism were particularly inflammatory and insensitive, as they trivialised and reinforced hostility towards the Hindu community, which was already facing violence. Rather than expressing empathy or restraint, the accused used the situation to malign Hinduism, thereby normalising hatred and hostility towards them. In recent times, there has been a surge in derogatory memes, comments, abusive posts, and slanders directed towards Hinduism, its deities, the Hindu community, and respected Hindu scholars across online platforms. This case stands as a glaring example within that trend. The accused’s derogatory statements form part of a broader pattern of online Hinduphobia, a toxic environment in which hate against Hindus is normalised and spread through targeted insults and ridicule. Such actions serve to deepen divisions, attack Hindu identity, and vilify an entire faith community. This deliberate targeting of Hinduism firmly establishes this act as a religiously motivated hate crime; therefore, it is being categorised under the hate crime database. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incidents based on when an event occurred or when the victim's ordeal began. It is important to clarify that the report does not specify the exact date when the accused posted the offensive content. Therefore, for documentation purposes, we have recorded the date based on when it was reported by the media, 11 January 2026. Disclaimer: The perpetrator count has been recorded as two, and the perpetrator's religion has been selected as Muslim extremists for documentation purposes. This categorisation is based on the role of a Muslim youth who instigated and directed the primary act of online abuse targeting Hinduism. Although the individual who posted the derogatory remarks, Amrik Singh, his actions were carried out at the behest of the Muslim instigator and formed part of a coordinated act of religious hostility directed towards the Hindu community. For documentation purposes, the case has therefore been recorded under a single perpetrator religion for consistency in categorisation, without disregarding the involvement of other accused individuals. This approach ensures clarity in data representation without overlooking the involvement of other accused individuals.
