Hindu youth assaulted over social media photograph, one killed by Muslim men in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
Hindu youth Nishant Singh was stabbed to death in broad daylight by two Muslim men on 31 December 2025 in Kushinagar district of Uttar Pradesh, an incident that led to public outrage, road blockades, and heightened tension in the area. The incident occurred at around 1:00 p.m. near Judwania village when Nishant Singh, aged 20, son of Santosh Singh, a resident of Amarpur village under Kasya police station limits, was travelling towards Kasya market to purchase household items. He was accompanied by a friend named Kundan. During the journey, Nishant Singh and his friend were intercepted by two men identified as Naushad, aged 23, son of Anwar Ali, and Faisal, aged 21, son of Murtuja, both residents of Judwania village. A confrontation ensued on the road. Kundan was assaulted first. When Nishant Singh intervened to protect his friend, he was attacked with a knife. Nishant Singh sustained multiple stab injuries to his neck, chest, and abdomen. One account described his throat being slit during the assault. He collapsed at the spot due to excessive bleeding. Local residents rushed Nishant Singh to the district hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The friend accompanying him survived the assault. Following the killing, anger spread rapidly through the area. Villagers placed the body of Nishant Singh on the road and blocked traffic, demanding strict and immediate action against those responsible. Protesters called for encounter action and bulldozer action against the accused. Police forces were deployed in large numbers to control the situation and restore order. A murder case was registered based on a complaint filed by the victim’s father, Santosh Singh. Police confirmed that both accused, Naushad and Faisal, were arrested and taken into custody. The investigation began immediately after the incident. Police stated that the sequence of events originated from a dispute connected to a social media photograph involving Nishant Singh’s close friend and the sister of one of the accused. The disagreement escalated into a violent confrontation that resulted in the fatal stabbing of Nishant Singh. Reports also noted that Nishant Singh assisted his family with farming work and was preparing for army recruitment examinations. He was described as the only child of his parents. His death caused severe emotional devastation to his family. The killing of Nishant Singh triggered fear, anger, and unrest among residents, who viewed the incident as a serious breakdown of public safety and justice. The atmosphere in the area remained tense following the incident.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the immediate cause of the crime appears to be non-religious, that is, a personal dispute connected to a social media photograph involving Nishant Singh's friend and the perpetrator's female relative. However, the extreme and disproportionate violence inflicted by the accused on the Hindu victim initially raised concerns about possible communal motives or religious animosity behind the attack. The brutality of the attack, including multiple stab wounds to the neck, chest, and abdomen, and reports of the throat being slit, over what began as a minor disagreement, could give the impression of targeted animosity. Such excessive violence might appear consistent with patterns observed in communal or religiously motivated incidents. There is a well-documented precedent where hostility towards Hindus has played a role in violent incidents, which can lead observers to suspect a communal dimension when an attack is particularly brutal. The visibility of the victim as a Hindu and the extreme nature of the violence could therefore create an initial impression of religious motivation. In this specific case, however, there is currently no direct evidence to indicate that the attack was premeditated or motivated by religious hatred. No religious slurs, statements, or messages were reported during the incident, and the investigation has not revealed any prior animosity or communal connection between the accused and the victim. The altercation appears circumstantial, arising from a momentary personal dispute rather than a pattern of religious hostility. Since there are currently no clear indicators of religious motivation, and neither the deceased victim’s family nor witnesses have suggested such a motive, the case is considered non-religiously motivated. If any future evidence emerges indicating communal intent, the case may be reclassified, but based on the available facts, this is not a hate crime of a religious nature. Disclaimer: The victim count mentioned is two: Kundan, who was assaulted, and Nishant, who was murdered.
