Hindu woman pressured for religious conversion and nikah by Muslim man in Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh
Case Summary
In the Ambikapur city of Surguja district, Chhattisgarh, a Hindu woman, belonging to the Scheduled caste community, was befriended and pressured for religious conversion and nikah (Islamic marriage) by a Muslim man named Firoz Ansari. According to reports, the Muslim accused, Firoz Ansari, a resident of Jharkhand, reached the District and Sessions Court premises to prepare for marriage documents with the Hindu woman. The woman had also called her father to the court on the pretext of some work, following which information spread among local lawyers and members of Hindu organisations that a Muslim man was intending to marry a Hindu woman in a forced and deceptive manner. Members of the Hindu organisation and lawyers gathered at the court premises, where they objected to the marriage and questioned the victim. During counselling, the victim stated that she had known Firoz Ansari for several years and that he was pressuring her to convert to Islam and undergo nikah with him. With the support of Hindu organisation members, she subsequently refused to go ahead with the nikah. Subsequently, police also arrived at the site and took both the accused and the victim to the police station for questioning. The woman later submitted a written application to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Ambikapur stating that she did not wish to undergo nikah and requested legal protection in case Firoz Ansari or his family attempted to exert pressure in the future. As of the date of writing this report, the police took the accused into custody for questioning and stated that further legal action would be taken based on the investigation.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of: Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Under this, the sub-category selected is - Forced conversion before marriage, with the tertiary category being - Forced to do nikah. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. This case has been added to the tracker because a Hindu woman was befriended, deceived and pressured for religious conversion and nikah by the Muslim accused, Firoz Ansari. The victim revealed that the accused was pressuring her to convert to Islam and undergo nikah with him. In Islam, marriage to a non-Muslim partner is prohibited, which is why she was pressured for religious conversion. Pressuring a Hindu woman to discard her faith and embrace another was a direct attack on her religious identity and dignity. It was not a matter of personal choice; it was coercion rooted in hostility towards the victim's Hindu identity. Such an attempt reflects religious animosity because the act was not simply about personal differences but about erasing the victim’s Hindu faith, making it a religiously motivated crime. The accused did not merely seek a personal relationship; he attempted to pressure her to abandon her faith and adopt another, directly attacking her religious beliefs and cultural identity. Such acts go beyond personal misconduct and reflect hostility towards an entire community, as the victim was selected and targeted precisely because she is Hindu. The intent to forcibly alter her religion demonstrates animosity toward her religion, making the crime both personal and collectively targeted against Hindus. Such actions stem from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Such acts are not merely personal crimes; they are rooted in a desire to dominate and erase the religious identity of the Hindu victim. Since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime in the tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incidents based on when an event occurred or when the victim's ordeal began, rather than when it is reported by the media. It is important to clarify that none of the media sources covering this case has specified the exact date when the victim came into contact with the accused. Therefore, for documentation purposes, we have recorded the date based on when the incident was reported in the media, 7 January 2026.
