Minor Hindu girls targeted, brainwashed for religious conversion and nikah by Muslims in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
In the Amla town of Bareilly district, Uttar Pradesh, two minor Hindu girls, aged 16 and 17, were targeted and brainwashed for religious conversion and nikah (Islamic marriage) by four Muslims, including a Muslim woman. According to media reports, the Hindu victims were lured from their homes after being contacted and persuaded by a Muslim woman, who brought them to a local restaurant near the Dr Abdul Kalam Park on 31 December 2025. There, the woman facilitated a meeting between the minor victims and three Muslim men from Sirauli town. This interaction was aimed at persuading and brainwashing the minor girls to convert to Islam and enter into nikah with the Muslim men. When the victim's family received information about the incident, they reached the spot along with members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, two Hindu organisations, who intervened, apprehended the accused, including the Muslim woman, and handed them over to the police. Subsequently, the victim's families submitted written complaints at the police station. Inspector Amla Kunwar Bahadur Singh confirmed that six individuals, including the Muslim woman, the three Muslim men, and the two Hindu victims, were brought to the police station following information provided by Hindu organisation workers. After questioning, the victims were handed over to their families. The police stated that the matter remained under investigation and that further legal action would be taken after an investigation.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of - Predatory Proselytisation. Within it, the sub-category selected is - Proselytisation by grooming, brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination, with the tertiary category being - Conversion of minor. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting, regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to the existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytisation, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. This case has been added to the tracker because two minor Hindu girls, aged 16 and 17, were targeted and brainwashed for religious conversion and nikah (Islamic marriage) by four Muslims. Firstly, it is important to note here that the victims were minors, which means the element of consent and genuine change of conscience was missing ab initio. Minors, due to their young age and lack of maturity, are particularly vulnerable to manipulation and coercion. They may not have the ability to fully understand the implications of converting to another religion, and the Muslim perpetrators purposely targeted and exploited this vulnerability of the victim. Since this case exemplifies the use of coercion and manipulation to achieve religious conversion, it is a blatant act of religious hate, which is why it has been documented here in the hate tracker. Such acts are not merely criminal in nature; they are ideologically charged, revealing religious prejudice and a calculated intent to alter the religious identity of minor Hindus without their volition. The use of grooming, where trust is built only to exploit, is an insidious method that exploits the child’s naivety and dependence. Secondly, the Muslim accused lured the minor Hindu victims with the intention of facilitating religious conversion and nikah. In Islam, marriage to a non-Muslim partner is prohibited, which is why the minors were being persuaded for religious conversion. By arranging meetings, persuading the minors, and coordinating the process through a female accomplice, the accused engaged in a coordinated plan designed to manipulate, coerce, and exert influence over the Hindu girls’ personal and religious choices. This systematic attempt to erode the religious foundation of Hindu individuals and replace it with allegiance to another faith, in this case, Islam, reflects deep religious malice and animus against the victims' religious identity. Such actions stem from inherent hostility towards the victims' professed faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Therefore, religious conversions, even of minors, are often seen as a badge of honour, totally disregarding the methods used to achieve it. Since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime in the Hinduphobia Tracker.
