Case Summary

In Chhipitola Phulwari Bagiya, located in the Pihani police station area of Hardoi district, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu temple was targeted, and the sacred Shivalinga, a religious symbol representing Lord Shiva, was desecrated by a few unknown miscreants. According to media reports, the attackers threw bricks at the Shiva temple and damaged the Shivalinga. Tension and anger descended upon the area when locals learned of the incident. Villagers expressed strong displeasure and described it as an attack on Hindu religious sentiments. The attack caused the Shivalinga to dislodge from its original position. When a few locals discovered the desecration, they informed other villagers and the temple management immediately, and gathered in large numbers at the temple premises to express their displeasure over the incident. Villagers stated that such incidents were an attempt to disrupt communal harmony and demanded strict action against the culprits. The Pihani Kotwali police arrived at the scene upon receiving the information and assessed the situation. Police secured the temple premises and began an investigation. Circle Officer Harianwa Ajit Singh stated that the Shivalinga had been dislodged, but the temple management reinstalled it. He added that the situation remained completely calm and no untoward incidents occurred. Police officials examined CCTV footage from the temple and surrounding areas, given the seriousness of the matter. Local residents underwent questioning to identify the person or persons involved. Police stated that the culprits would not be spared under any circumstances. Villagers demanded increased security at the temple from the administration. They described the temple as a centre of faith in the area and condemned the incident. Meanwhile, the police administration appealed to the public to maintain peace, assured them of a fair investigation, and promised that the accused would be arrested soon. Police increased surveillance in the area, and the situation remained normal.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category selected in this case is- Attack on Hindu religious representations. The subcategory selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbols. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. The other subcategory selected is- Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. This incident is unequivocally a religiously motivated hate crime as the perpetrators desecrated a sacred Shivalinga by hurling bricks at the temple. The attack targeted a Hindu temple with precision, a revered religious site of immense significance in Hinduism. These temples are no mere structures; they are divine abodes for Hindu deities, profoundly holy spaces cherished by Hindus. Miscreants hurling bricks at a temple amount to brazen religious hatred, slashing straight at the faith and sentiments of the Hindu community. The Shivalinga stands as one of Hinduism's most sacred symbols, representing Lord Shiva and worshipped with lifelong devotion by Hindus. It commands the deepest reverence. Damaging the Shivalinga exposes the attackers' vicious animosity towards Hindu beliefs and symbols, cementing this as a blatant hate crime designed to inflame and injure the religious sentiments of the Hindu community. Attacks like this, desecrating sacred Hindu temples and revered symbols such as the Shivalinga, stem directly from deep-seated religious animosity against the Hindu community. They constitute clear instances of religiously motivated hate crimes. Even with the perpetrators unidentified, the act demonstrates deep-seated hatred towards Hinduism and Hindus. Therefore, this case has been added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia tracker.
