Case Summary

In Sindhauli village, located in Satna district, Madhya Pradesh, a Hindu man was driven to suicide after his Muslim girlfriend’s father and accomplice forced him to convert to Islam and marry her. The Hindu victim was also subjected to death threats by the Muslim perpetrators. The Hinduphobia Tracker's team contacted the police, and they confirmed that the victim was a Hindu man. According to media reports, the victim was in a relationship with a Muslim woman and was in regular contact with her. Both the Hindu man and the Muslim woman wanted to marry. However, the Muslim woman’s father, Bablu Khan, discovered this relationship. He, along with his friend Attu Khan, went to the Hindu victim’s house on 14 December 2024 and threatened him. They pressured the Hindu victim to convert to Islam and then marry the Muslim woman, threatening that they would kill him if he failed to do so. Following these threats, the Hindu man attempted suicide by consuming poison on 14 December 2024. On 17 December 2024, based on a report from the Hindu man’s mother, Rampur Baghel Police registered a case against Bablu Khan and Attu Khan under sections 351(5), 3(5) of the IPC, and 3.5 of the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Information Act, and began searching for them. Acting on a tip from an informant, the police arrested Attu Khan a year later on 29 December 2025. The police stated that the other accused, Bablu Khan, had died.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category selected in this case is- Men attacked for being associated with non-Hindu women. The subcategory selected is- Threatened to convert by family of partner. When Hindu men are in a relationship with non-Hindu women, there are cases where the man faces threats to convert and change his religious identity by the non-Hindu woman or her family. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu woman known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu woman or her family starts forcing/pressurizing the Hindu man to convert to Islam and also assaults the victim to force him to convert. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu man converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the man was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. The other subcategory selected is- Suicide upon being forced to convert. When Hindu men are in a relationship with non-Hindu women, there are cases where the Hindu man faces pressure/threats/violence to convert and change his religious identity by the non-Hindu spouse or her family or/and religious leaders. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu spouse known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu spouse starts forcing/pressurizing the Hindu man to convert. In some of these cases, unable to bear the pressure/threat/violence being mounted by the non-Hindu partner or her family to convert, the Hindu man commits suicide. In such cases, often, threats are also given to the family members of the Hindu man. Since such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim, leading to the Hindu spouse committing suicide, these cases are categorized as a hate crime. This case exemplifies a religiously motivated hate crime, as the Hindu man was targeted by the Muslim woman's father and his Muslim accomplice specifically due to his Hindu identity and his relationship with a Muslim woman. Both the man and the woman were adults in a consensual relationship and wanted to marry. Conversion was never something they discussed or planned; they simply wanted to wed. The accused, the Muslim woman's father, along with his Muslim accomplice, threatened the Hindu man to convert to Islam to marry her and warned that they would kill him if he refused. This act constituted a religiously motivated assault. The Muslim woman's father opposed the Hindu man not out of concern for his daughter, but explicitly due to the man's Hindu identity. This stems from the common propaganda within Muslim circles known as the "Bhagwa Love Trap," which falsely claims Hindu men target Muslim women for forced conversion, marriage, and sexual exploitation. No evidence supports this narrative. Even in this case, both parties knew each other's religious identities yet chose to pursue the relationship without malice. Despite this, the Muslim woman's father forced the Hindu man to convert to Islam and marry her. The Islamic faith prohibits a non-Muslim man from marrying a Muslim woman without conversion, viewing a Hindu man's involvement as a disrespect to their faith and family honour. The pressure to disown his Hindu faith highlights a violation of religious autonomy and clear coercion tied to his relationship with the Muslim woman. The threats drove him to suicide, underscoring the intensity of the intimidation. Forced conversion of any sort violates an individual's religious rights. In this case, the Hindu victim faced conversion to Islam and marriage to the Muslim woman or death, leaving him no choice. Troubled by these dictates, he attempted suicide, which showcases the severity of the threats and intimidation. Such actions are clearly rooted in deep-seated religious animosity towards the Hindu man and his religious identity, making it a religiously motivated crime. Since this case meets the parameters of a religiously motivated offence, it has been added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
