Case Summary

In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Kamran Akram Khan, who runs a mutton shop, killed a Hindu youth named Gautam Solanki on April 28, 2024. Kamran struck Gautam on the head with an iron rod during a confrontation, also injuring another youth named Bunty who tried to intervene. The incident occurred in Depalpur, Indore. Gautam, a 21-year-old resident of Ahirkhedi, was at the market with his friend Bunty when they encountered Kamran near his Super Mutton Shop in Mirzapur. After the attack, Gautam's family arrived at the scene and called for an ambulance. They were later transferred to Aurobindo Hospital from a government hospital due to their worsening condition, where Gautam succumbed to his injuries. Gautam Solanki, who ran a tent house, had family ties to Hindu organisations. Hindu protestors alleged Kamran was aided by 3-4 others from the Muslim community in Gautam's murder. The police arrested him and bulldozed his shop.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, a Hindu man was murdered by Muslim butchers, however, on the face of it, there seems to be no religious motive to the crime. There was no statement to that effect from the other victim, who was injured, no statement from the police, and also, no indication that religion-based statements were made to clarify the intention of the perpetrators. Often, hate crimes do not indicate being a religion-based crime on the face of it, but the dynamics of the crime make it evident that it was.
