Case Summary

In Nepal's Dhanusha district, on April 16, 2024, two minor Hindu girls, aged 14 and 15, were abducted by members of the Muslim community in an incident of grooming jihad. This prompted the Hindu community to protest on April 25, demanding strict action against the accused. Protesters blocked roads and burned tires. The situation escalated when the police detained Lakshmi, a woman leader from a Hindu organisation, which led to further unrest. Lakshmi was released on April 27, 2024, and the police began searching for the accused. The families of the victims filed a complaint identifying several suspects, including Hakeeda, Nagina Khatoon, Sajid, Mofid, Sameer, Ashraf, Mastkeem, and Liasat, accusing them of being part of an organised human trafficking gang. All of them were accused of trapping minor Nepali girls and selling them at high prices in Indian cities like Kolkata and Mumbai. Rajesh Yadav, president of Hindu Samrat Sena, claimed police inaction and pressure from Muslim and leftist leaders. Despite protests and the detention of one of the accused's parents, the Nepali police have yet to recover the victims or arrest any suspects.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, Hindu minor girls were abducted and trafficked by Muslim perpetrators. The Hindu community protested for the recovery of the minor girls. The family of the victim accused the perpetrators of trafficking minor girls regularly. Such cases could be considered cases of Grooming if there is a pattern of girls belonging to the same community being trafficked regularly. The pattern itself could establish the religious motive if all the victims belong to the same religious community (Hindus). In this case, however, while there are suspicions that the victims may have belonged to the same community (Hindus) and that Hindu girls were specifically targeted, sufficient information to establish pattern is not available. This case is, therefore, being categorised as 'undecided'. If more details emerge, it would be added to the hate crime database.
