Afaq lures Hindu woman, forces her to convert, abandons her after the birth of their daughter
Case Summary
In the Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh, Afaq, a resident of the Mohabbatpur Painesa area, had gone to Mumbai few years back where he met a young Hindu woman named Sunita from Bharat Nagar. The two started talking, got closer, and he ultimately proposed to her which she accepted. He then established a physical relationship with her. He claimed that he would secure her a job at the glass factory in Hardoi. He brought her to Hardoi. She became pregnant and underwent an abortion. He lured her under the pretext of marriage and impregnated her again. The woman gave birth to a girl and the pair lived together for four years along with the child. However, he did not marry the woman and returned to his native village one day without telling her. She eventually understood that he had left her and absconded, after which she arrived in Kaushambi and lodged a complaint at the Painesa police station. She revealed that following the birth of their child, he had been urging her to convert to Islam. The victim recently found out that he was getting married to someone else, and as a result, had hurried from Mumbai to Kaushambi.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Because of the case's specifics, we have put this case under the prime category: Hate Crimes against women in relationships. Within this core category, the sub-category 'Leaves Hindu partner upon refusal to convert' has been selected. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces pressure/threats/violence to convert and change her religious identity by the non-Hindu man. However, when the Hindu woman refuses to convert, the non-Hindu man ends the relationship or divorces the woman, as the case might be. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressuring the Hindu woman to change her religious identity and upon her refusal, ends the relationship. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force, or threat after she refuses to convert to Islam, are not considered a part of the hate tracker. This case is a distinct case of religiously motivated hate crime as the Muslim perpetrator trapped the Hindu victim in his love trap with the hidden intention of converting her to his religion. In this case, the Muslim perpetrator, at first, trapped a Hindu woman by promising her a job. After gaining the trust of the victim, the accused established physical relations with her. The duo had a child and after that, the accused started forcing the girl to convert to Islam. Trapping someone in a love affair with the malafide intention of conversion is not only ethically problematic but also a sort of harassment that is rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and is therefore documented as a religiously motivated hate crime in this Hindu hate tracker.
