Case Summary

A man named Salman Khan was arrested by Rajasthan Police for raping a 25-year-old Hindu woman under the pretext of love. Khan, who ran a mobile repair shop in Jaipur, pretended to be a Hindu to lure the victim in his trap. Reportedly, he raped the 25-year-old woman, shot obscene videos and then blackmailed her into soliciting 2-4 lakhs of rupees. He also took the victim to Delhi against her will by threatening to upload the videos on social media. The matter came to light when the woman’s family filed a complaint with the Shipra Path police station. The cops initiated a probe, recovered the victim from Delhi and handed her over to the family. During the investigation, it was uncovered that the accused had previously entrapped 3-4 other Hindu women using the same modus operandi. The police seized the mobile phone of Salman Khan and sent it for forensic investigation. Station House Officer (Shipra Path police station) Amit Kumar informed, “The victim first met the accused 5-6 years ago. Salman Khan failed in the 8th standard and is originally a resident of Ajmer. He had also purchased a scooty in her name.”

Why it is Hate Crime ?

When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. What gives this case a distinct religious angle is that the Muslim perpetrator actively hid his religion and pretended to be a Hindu to ensnare the Hindu woman. He deceived the Hindu girl and then inflicted torture on the victim. Further, the details of the case reveal that the victim was not the only target of the Muslim perpetrator but he had previously also singled out many Hindu women and targeted them. The religious motive of the crime is evident from the fact that the perpetrator intentionally targeted only Hindu women. This stems from the perpetrators's bias for the Hindu faith, which is why this case has been documented as a hate crime.
