Case Summary

In Agra, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu woman was raped and pressured for religious conversion by a Muslim man named Naushad. The accused had deceived the Hindu woman by posing as a Hindu. He also molested the woman's minor daughter. According to the victim, she met the Muslim accused in 2023, who posed as a Hindu man named Naresh. Due to being neighbours, both started talking to each other and became friends. Over time, he started doing obscene acts with her and pressured her for sex. Over time, he began making obscene advances toward her and pressured her into physical intimacy. Thus, the woman on 2 November 2023, filed a complaint at Etmaduddaula police station; however, no action was taken. On May 15, 2025, he took her to a hotel by threatening to kill her husband. He raped her and also took obscene pictures and videos of her. He then started blackmailing her by threatening to make the video viral. On protesting, he threatened to kill her husband and children. The accused then took her to a Maulvi and pressured her for religious conversion. It was then revealed that the accused's real name was Naushad Khand and he was a Muslim. She somehow escaped, but the accused came to her house and further threatened her to convert. On the day of Bakrid, the accused entered her home and molested her minor daughter. When the girl and her father protested, he physically assaulted them. The noise alerted neighbours, causing him to flee the scene. The woman, along with the members of the Hindu organisations, approached the police station and filed a complaint. Based on the woman's statement, police registered a case against Naushad alias Naresh. As of the date of writing this report, the accused was arrested by the police and the investigation of ongoing.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of: - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within it, the sub-category selected is: Man pretends to be Hindu, with the tertiary category being: - Name changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The other sub-category relevant here is: - Blackmailed to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is blackmailed to convert her religion, owing to her religious identity of being a Hindu. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim, however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual and the non-Hindu man starts blackmailing a Hindu woman to convert her religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu woman is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to her or her family, threats of violence etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The second primary category selected here is: - Predatory Proselytisation. Within it, the sub-category selected here is: - Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. This case has been added to the tracker because a Hindu woman was raped and pressured to convert by a Muslim man who posed as a Hindu. His malicious intent was evident from the outset, as he sought to befriend the Hindu woman by deliberately concealing his Muslim identity. This itself is a clear manifestation of bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. By concealing his true identity, he exploited her trust, targeting her under false pretences. This indicates a premeditated intent to manipulate her based on her religious background. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal but can also be interpreted as an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs. Furthermore, he raped her by threatening to kill her husband and took obscene pictures of her for blackmail. This was not just an act of violence, but rather it was psychological warfare aimed at mentally breaking a Hindu woman before pushing her for religious conversion. Rape and death threats, in this context, served as both a tool of physical violation and a method of mental coercion aimed at subjugating a Hindu woman into abandoning her faith. He then took her to a Maulvi to achieve his goal of converting a Hindu woman. When the woman managed to escape, the accused again started harassing her. On Eid, he forcefully entered their house and molested her minor daughter and physically assaulted her husband, further proving his intent to convert the Hindu woman at any cost. Each of these acts was a means to subjugate the Hindu woman and her family, sending a clear message that their safety depended on compliance. His actions were a result of religious animosity towards the Hindu faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Such doctrines not only justify but also promote the dehumanisation of those who resist conversion, resulting in violence towards them and even their loved ones. Thus, since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime. Disclaimer: The victim states that she met the accused in 2023 without mentioning an exact date or month. Thus, to document this case, we have used an indicative date—January 1, 2023—as a placeholder to represent the beginning of her suffering. While media coverage of the incident emerged on June 13, 2025, the Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, not when it was reported.
