Hindu women in Jaunpur lured and indoctrinated with religious texts to convert to Christianity
Case Summary
In the Harijan colony of Sureri area of the Dehua village of Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, Hindu women from the Dalit community were targeted for forced conversion by two Christian men. This incident came to light when police arrested the two accused on 14th December 2025 on charges of attempting to convert 25 Hindu women to Christianity. Twenty Bibles and a bottle of water were recovered from the accused. According to the police, action was taken after receiving information that 20-25 women from the village's Scheduled Caste community were being lured into converting to Christianity. The two Christian accused, members of Christian missionaries, were indoctrinating the Hindu women with the Bible in a house. Upon receiving this information, Inspector Rajesh Kumar Mishra, along with his team, reached the spot and conducted an investigation. During this time, police arrested two Christian men, namely, Krishna Soni and Pramod Kumar, residents of Bhanpur (Dhundhapur), for carrying out the conversions. Station House Officer Rajesh Kumar Mishra said that they received information on Dial 112, and action was taken after verifying the information. A thorough investigation was underway. At the time of writing this report, the police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) in the case.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category selected in this case is- Predatory Proselytisation. The subcategory selected is- Proselytisation by grooming, brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination. The tertiary category selected is- Pattern of targeting Hindus. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytization, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. This case was added to the Hinduphobia Tracker as the Christian perpetrators deliberately targeted Dalit Hindu women for forced conversion. The victims endured indoctrination with Bible teachings aimed at converting them to Christianity. The use of indoctrination and brainwashing techniques to manipulate these Hindu women into abandoning their ancestral faith, Hinduism, exposed deep-seated religious animosity towards the victims solely because of their Hindu identity. Forced conversions violate an individual's religious autonomy and sacred beliefs. Here, the Hindu women faced brainwashing with Christian texts like the Bible, proving the accused held no respect for their original Hindu faith, aimed to strip it away through coercive and manipulative methods, and weaponised one religion's scriptures against another community's devotees—constituting a blatant anti-Hindu hate crime fuelled by profound religious hatred. Media reports confirmed that these conversions had been occurring for several days, revealing not an isolated incident but a deliberate pattern where the Christian accused systematically targeted vulnerable Hindu women from the Scheduled Caste community. This premeditated, well-calculated campaign underscores the sustained intent to erode Hindu religious identity through repeated indoctrination sessions in a private house, armed with 20 Bibles and ritual water, highlighting the organised nature of the assault on Hindu dignity and autonomy. Given that this case fulfils every parameter of a religiously motivated crime—targeting based on Hindu identity, coercive indoctrination, violation of faith, and patterned aggression—it has been duly added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
