In Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, a sacred Shivalinga, a revered symbol representing Lord Shiva, was deliberately defiled by an unidentified miscreant who placed non-vegetarian food on it. This incident occurred in Garra, where a sacred Shivalinga was installed. This area fell within the Kotwali police station's jurisdiction. Some people had come to the nearby Botanical Garden to celebrate and party. One of them, the accused, arrived near the Shivalinga with chicken gravy, poured the chicken gravy into a pot placed to prevent water from falling on the Shivalinga. He then poured the chicken gravy onto the Shivalinga, thereby desecrating it. After this, the accused fled the scene. When locals learned of this incident on 11th December 2025, they were outraged by the hurt religious sentiments, leading them to complain to the Kotwali police station. Based on a complaint from local resident Gajanan Patle, the police registered a case of hurting religious sentiments and began investigating the matter. Kotwali Police Station in-charge Kamesh Kumar Dhumketi stated that given the seriousness of the matter, the police took swift action and hoped to apprehend the perpetrator soon. Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category selected in this case is- Attack on Hindu religious representations. The subcategory selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. This case exemplifies a brazen anti-Hindu hate crime through the deliberate desecration of the Shivalinga, Hinduism's most sacred symbol that embodies Lord Shiva—the eternal, formless essence of cosmic creation, destruction, and regeneration, drawing unwavering devotion from millions of Hindus who pour their deepest faith into its worship. For devout families across generations, the Shivalinga represents divine purity and Shiva's boundless energy, enshrined in temples and homes where believers offer milk, bilva leaves, and holy water in daily rituals to seek protection, prosperity, and spiritual cleansing; even the slightest touch of meat or non-vegetarian substances turns it ritually impure, shattering the sanctity that Hindus guard with their lives and invoking profound outrage among communities whose lives revolve around these timeless traditions. The accused's act of pouring chicken gravy—a blatant non-vegetarian impurity—directly onto the Shivalinga amounted to outright defilement and desecration of this inviolable Hindu symbol. Despite knowing the fact that meat desecrates sacred spaces and wounds the religious sentiments of everyday Hindu worshippers striving to honour their faith, the perpetrator forcefully poured the gravy into the pot and smeared it across the Shivalinga before fleeing, launching a targeted assault on the heart of Hindu devotion. This went far beyond childish mischief or accident; it constituted deliberate, forceful religious desecration fuelled by raw animosity against the Hindu community and their cherished beliefs, firmly establishing it as a religiously motivated hate crime that strikes at the core of Hindu identity. Some may try to dismiss the religious motivation by pointing to an unidentified miscreant lacking obvious intent, but the act's precision demolishes that evasion. The attacker targeted and desecrated a Hindu sacred symbol, chose the most offensive method with meat—a known abomination in Hindu practice—and vanished without touching other nearby objects, a pattern demonstrating deliberate provocation to humiliate and enrage ordinary Hindus going about their worship. Such acts are motivated by deep-seated hatred and contempt for Hinduism, its symbols and its adherents, making it an instance of anti-Hindu hate crime. Given that this stands as a clear instance of religiously motivated offence, it warrants immediate entry into the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
