Hindu deities mocked, sacred texts maligned, and Brahmins abused by faculty at educational institution in Hyderabad
Case Summary
In Hyderabad's Institute of Public Enterprise, Hindu deities were mocked and abused by a faculty member named Professor Bhattacharya. The accused also maligned the Vedas and the Bhagavad Gita, revered Hindu texts, and made abusive remarks against Brahmins and other priests of temples. He also mocked and ridiculed Hindus going to sacred pilgrimages. This incident came to light when a video of the accused went viral on social media. In the video, the accused mocked the concept of murti puja (worship of a deity through an idol) and maligned the Vedas and Bhagavad Gita by stating that idol worship formed no part of these scriptures. The accused said, "Why do you fool them into worshipping idols? Which idol is mentioned in the Gita and Vedas? Which mata is mentioned? Which pashu is mentioned?" The accused further mocked Hindu deities by saying, "Why do you make them worship Ganesha and the monkey god?, referring to Lord Hanuman. Why do you make them worship Narasimha Swamy? This fellow, referring to Lord Narasimha, had to come down to give Prahlad's father death?" The accused then further mocked Lord Shiva by saying, "Does God have to come down to earth to kill? Does he have to come down with a trishul and kill?" The accused then mocked Goddess Durga by saying, "Mata has to be given a trishul to kill asuras here, but can she not do it from heaven?" The accused then further mocked the Hindu faith in its entirety and abused Brahmins by saying, "Look at this stupidity that has been spread by these idiot pandita purohits—Brahmin idiots of the temples. They loot money and minds of the people." The accused further mocked Hindus going to Hindu pilgrimages by saying, "Why do you want to go to pilgrimages and smell the sweat of other devotees waiting in long lines?" The accused further claimed that the Gita and Vedas only talk about meditation, so why go to temples? The accused further mocked Hindutva by saying, "Hindutva-Hinduism is the best religion? But with these idiot pandits, we are the best? With idol worship, are we best? Being idiots, we are best?" The accused further said people are ignorant because of "idiot Brahmins". The accused further stated that Brahmins are destroying the religiosity of Hindus in temples.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category selected in this case is- Hate Speech against Hindus. The subcategory selected is- Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. The other subcategory selected is- Subversion of scriptures. Subverting the religious scriptures of Hindus has particularly devastating consequences. Subversion of the scriptures of Hindus is often done to justify or promote hatred, discrimination, or violence against specific individuals or groups of Hindus. Religious scriptures are often nuanced and those who harbour religious animosity towards Hindus often misquote or misrepresent the scripture to legitimise their animosity and hate towards the faith and its adherents. Any such misquoting of scriptures or subversion to justify hate, violence and discrimination against Hindus owing to religious animosity is hate speech and is categorised as such. This case constitutes a clear instance of anti-Hindu hate speech by the accused. He denigrated and misrepresented murti puja, a cornerstone of Hindu worship, showcasing deep-seated religious animosity towards the Hindu community. Firstly, he denigrated murti puja and maligned revered scriptures by stating in a derogatory manner, "Why do you fool them into worshipping idols? Which idol is mentioned in the Gita and the Vedas? Which mata is mentioned? Which pashu is mentioned?" This portrayal of murti puja as deliberate deception constitutes hate speech and gross misrepresentation of Hinduism's profound theology. Hindus do not worship the idol per se; they invoke and worship the deity through the idol, which serves merely as a consecrated medium to focus devotion and manifest divine presence in daily rituals and temple worship. The accused's deliberate denigration and mockery thus expose his deep-seated religious animosity towards the Hindu community, framing a sacred practice as fraudulent trickery designed to exploit believers. Secondly, by misrepresenting scriptures like the Vedas and Bhagavad Gita to assert no idol worship exists, he positioned himself with false authority to mock murti puja, betraying profound ignorance or wilful disdain for Hinduism. In Hinduism, the Vedas hold equal reverence alongside the Puranas, Tantras, and other texts, all documenting instances of murti puja, including Shivalingam worship, which qualifies as an idol form symbolising Shiva's infinite energy. His selective, whim-driven assault on this practice—ignoring the holistic scriptural tradition—reveals deep-seated religious animosity towards Hindus. Subverting Hindu scriptures to mock and denigrate Hindus and their practices amounts to a clear instance of anti-Hindu hate speech, as it seeks to undermine the intellectual and spiritual legitimacy of the faith. The accused further mocked revered Hindu deities by questioning, "Why do you have to worship Ganesha? Why do you have to worship the monkey god, Lord Hanuman? Why do you have to worship Narsimha and called him a fellow," adding that he "had to come down to earth to give Prahlad's father death." He mocked Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga in similar fashion. All this denigrates the Hindu faith by targeting revered Hindu deities and their stories from the Puranas, showcasing deep-seated religious animosity towards the Hindu community. By mocking Lord Narsimha and Lord Hanuman—calling Lord Hanuman a "monkey god" while ridiculing Lord Narsimha's story of killing Hiranyakashipu and saving Prahlada—the accused stripped these divine narratives of meaning, reducing profound symbols of devotion, protection, and dharma to ridicule. Hindu deities hold deep reverence and religious significance for Hindus, and any attempts to mock or abuse them hurt the sentiments of millions, amounting to a clear instance of anti-Hindu hate speech. The accused also viciously mocked and abused the Brahmin community, labelling them as "idiot pandita purohits—Brahmin idiots of the temples" who "loot money and minds of the people" and spread "stupidity," while accusing them of destroying Hindu religiosity. He further ridiculed Hindu pilgrimages, sneering, "Why do you want to go to pilgrimages and smell the sweat of other devotees waiting in long lines," and questioned temple visits despite the Gita and Vedas emphasising meditation. By abusing Brahmins—traditional custodians of Hindu rituals, knowledge preservation, and scriptural interpretation—and deriding sacred pilgrimages that embody lifelong devotion and spiritual quest for millions across generations, he attacked core pillars of Hindu society and practice. This contemptuous assault on community roles and time-honoured traditions exposes his deep-seated religious animosity towards the Hindu community, amplifying the hate speech by portraying Hindu life as exploitative, absurd, and devoid of genuine spirituality. Given that this case meets the parameters of religiously motivated hate speech, it is added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records the dates of incidents based on when the hate crime occurs, rather than when the media reports it. In this case, media reports do not state the exact date when the accused made anti-Hindu statements. The accused's video first went viral on social media on 10th December 2025. This date is selected as the indicative date of the incident solely for documentation purposes.
