Minor Hindu girl, sexually harassed and blackmailed by Muslim men in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh
Case Summary
A 16-year-old Hindu girl studying in Class 12 in Shamgarh, Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh, was sexually harassed and blackmailed by two Muslim men. On 6 November 2025, when the victim was alone at home, Rehan, an old acquaintance, entered the house carrying a knife. He threatened the minor girl and forcibly recorded an obscene video of her. Along with another accused, Babu, Rehan then demanded a ₹5 lakh ransom from her family by threatening to release the video. Fearing the consequences, the family paid ₹2 lakh to the accused. When the family was unable to pay the remaining amount, the accused made the obscene video viral on social media on 4th December 2025. There was huge anger in the city after this entire incident. Due to the communal nature of the event, the entire city was put on lockdown. The administration deployed a heavy police force for security purposes. As news of the minor's video going viral spread, hundreds of people encircled the Shamgarh police station demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. The victim's family immediately approached the Shamgarh police station and lodged a formal complaint, following which both accused were arrested.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, a minor Hindu girl was threatened, sexually harassed and blackmailed by the Muslim men. This could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as it has been observed that in many cases, Muslim perpetrators target Hindu minor girls due to inherent animosity towards Hindus and minors being more vulnerable. Hindu girls are very vulnerable to crimes like rape and sexual assault at the hands of Muslim men. Since the accused already knew the victim, it indicates that he was already aware of the religious identity of the minor girl, further pointing towards religious profiling. However, it is also possible that the crime was one of opportunity, where the minor Hindu girl was simply accessible to the Muslim perpetrator. Meanwhile, it could also be argued that for a Muslim man, a Muslim girl would likely be more accessible than a Hindu girl. The fact that the perpetrator specifically targeted a Hindu girl could suggest religious bias. Nevertheless, the case details provide no clear indication of religious motivations. Furthermore, neither the victim nor her parents made any statements suggesting a religious motive behind the crime. For this reason, the case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If further information emerges that points towards a religious motivation behind this crime, it would then be reclassified and included in the hate crime database.
