Case Summary

In Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, an 18-year-old Hindu girl was abducted, raped and pressured for conversion by a Muslim man named Mohammad Naved. According to reports, the victim worked as a labourer at a coal furnace owned by district panchayat member Mohammad Salman, a resident of Lalauli. The accused, Mohammad Naved, who was the brother of Mohammad Salman, had known the victim for several months and gradually lured her into a relationship under the pretext of marriage. Around six months ago, when the victim was a minor, the accused raped her on the promise of marriage. Once she reached adulthood, she began asking him to fulfil that promise. On the night of 30 November 2025, the accused arrived at her house and persuaded her to elope with him, telling her that he would marry her. He took her in a car to a relative’s house in the Maswani locality of Fatehpur city, where he kept her confined and raped her several times. He then instructed her to travel with him to Banda, saying he would marry her there after she converted to Islam at a mosque. However, instead of marrying her, he abandoned her on the outskirts of a village along the Banda route and fled. Based on the victim's complaint, an FIR was registered by the police. As of the date of writing this report, the police began searching for the accused, and the investigation was ongoing. While media reports stated that there was an attempt at religious conversion, the victim, however, has not disclosed anything regarding religious conversion.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, a Hindu girl was abducted and sexually exploited by the Muslim accused, Naved. This could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as it has been observed that in many cases, Muslim perpetrators target Hindu minor girls due to inherent animosity towards Hindus. Hindu girls are very vulnerable to crimes like rape and sexual assault at the hands of Muslim men. Since the accused had intentions of marrying her, it indicates that the accused was already aware of the religious identity of the victim, further pointing towards religious profiling. However, it is also possible that the crime was one of opportunity, where the minor Hindu girl was simply accessible to the Muslim perpetrator. Meanwhile, it could also be argued that for a Muslim man, a Muslim girl would likely be more accessible than a Hindu girl. The fact that the perpetrator specifically targeted a Hindu girl could suggest religious bias. While it has been reported that the victim left with the accused after attaining adulthood, she was legally an adult at that stage and therefore capable of taking her own decisions regarding elopement or entering into a relationship. However, in the absence of a detailed statement from the victim clarifying the nature of events during this period, it is not possible to conclusively determine whether her actions were entirely voluntary or influenced by prior circumstances. At the same time, this does not negate the earlier allegation that the sexual relationship began when she was a minor, which would attract provisions under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, where consent is legally immaterial. Given the lack of clear evidence indicating a religious motive and the absence of explicit statements from the victim regarding coercion for conversion or the nature of consent after attaining adulthood, the case has been placed in the Undecided database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. If further information emerges that points towards a religious motivation behind this crime, it would then be reclassified and included in the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
