Case Summary

In the Jalalabad town of Shamli district, Uttar Pradesh, communal tensions escalated after a Muslim youth named Maqbool made abusive comments against Hindu deities and the Hindu community. According to reports, the Muslim accused, Maqbool, son of Maqsood, posted a video insulting Hindus and Hindu deities, which went viral on social media. In the video, he was seen exercising in a gym while using abusive and vulgar language against Lord Hanuman and Lord Ram. He also made inflammatory remarks against the wider Hindu community and the Hindu Rashtra (Hindu nation). The video immediately went viral on social media, provoking anger and outrage among the Hindu community. Workers of the Vishva Hindu Parishad submitted a formal complaint and demanded strict legal action against the accused. Swami Yashveer Maharaj of Baghra Ashram strongly condemned such actions, warning that if the police failed to take action, the Hindu community would gather outside the accused's residence and would recite the Hanuman Chalisa in protest. In response to the mounting tension, Thana Bhawan Police Inspector Bijendra Singh Rawat promptly took Maqbool into custody and initiated legal action. Police were monitoring the situation closely and appealed to the public to maintain peace and refrain from responding to rumours. As of the date of writing this report, the investigation was ongoing.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of- Hate Speech against Hindus. Within it, the sub-category selected is - Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. This incident clearly constitutes hate speech against Hindus by the Muslim perpetrator, involving deliberate and public expressions designed to insult and provoke the religious sentiments of the Hindu community. The derogatory remarks directed against Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman were aimed at undermining Hindu beliefs, marking it as religiously motivated hate speech targeting Hindus and their faith. Hindu deities occupy an immensely important and sacred position in Hinduism and are deeply revered by the Hindu community. Targeting them in a derogatory and abusive manner is not merely offensive; it reflects direct religious animosity towards Hinduism and its followers. By publicly maligning revered Hindu deities, the accused not only disrespected the faith but also incited hostility, making this a clear example of a religiously motivated crime. Such actions are consistent with hate speech, as they were designed to provoke hostility, offend religious sentiments, and spread contempt for Hinduism and its adherents. Furthermore, the abusive remarks in the video were not limited to Hindu deities but were also directed at the Hindu community and the idea of the Hindu Rashtra. Such expressions reflected not merely personal misconduct but a deeper animosity aligned with an ideological hostility that sections of Islamist thought hold towards Hindus and the Indian nation. It is pertinent to note that Muslim extremists harbour specific animosity towards Hindus and their faith and also view India as a Hindu collectivity. The very basis of the partition of India was that the Muslims believed that Islam was a nation unto itself, which could not survive with a Hindu collectivity like India. In this context, the perpetrator’s abusive language towards Hindus and the Hindu Rashtra echoed this broader ideology of exclusion, reflecting a targeted hostility towards both the community and the civilisational identity of India. In recent times, there has been a surge in derogatory memes, comments, abusive posts, and slanders directed towards Hinduism, its deities, the Hindu community, and respected Hindu scholars across online platforms. This case stands as a glaring example within that trend. The accused’s derogatory statements form part of a broader pattern of online Hinduphobia — a toxic environment in which hate against Hindus is normalised and spread through targeted insults and ridicule. Such actions serve to deepen divisions, attack Hindu identity, and vilify an entire faith community.
