Hindu woman brutally attacked with knife for refusing to convert to Islam by Muslim man in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
On 3rd December 2025, a young Hindu woman in Mirzapur survived a violent attack after a Muslim man, Mohammed Saif, assaulted her when she refused to convert to Islam. The incident occurred at her home in Ganeshganj, under the jurisdiction of Katra Kotwali police. The accused forced his way into the victim's house and slashed her with a blade before fleeing the scene. The police responded promptly, with senior officers arriving at the location. The victim was initially taken to a local hospital, where her condition was deemed stable. She was later transferred to Varanasi for further medical care and a more thorough examination to prevent any potential complications. Investigations revealed that the Hindu woman and the accused had known each other for about a year, initially having a friendly relationship that later deteriorated. Authorities believe that the attack was driven by personal tensions between the two, rather than being a premeditated act. The victim's brother filed a formal complaint, and a first information report (FIR) was registered against the accused. Given the severity of the attack, police are pursuing the case with urgency. In connection with the incident, seven individuals are currently in detention and being questioned to determine if they were involved in or had prior knowledge of the assault. Four police teams have been assigned to locate the accused, and a manhunt is underway across the district.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The case has been added to the tracker under the first prime category: Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Under this, the sub-category selected is: Assault or threat upon refusal to convert. A hate crime is supposed to have taken place when the perpetrator intentionally targets an individual owing to his/her bias against a certain characteristic of that individual or his/her declared hatred towards that characteristic. A religious hate crime is one where the offence is committed against an individual or a group or an individual or a group of people are targeted specifically because of their religious identity. In cases where religiously motivated hate crimes against Hindu women in relationships are committed, it is seen that the perpetrator targets the victim specifically because of her religious identity of being a Hindu and is therefore a hate crime. In this category, we would also add cases where women have been subjected to sexual crimes owing to religious hate/animosity,, but were not in a relationship with the perpetrator. In such cases, there would have to be a specific marker of religious animosity as a motivation for the crime. For example, grooming young Hindu girls for sexual exploitation with the non-Hindu perpetrator targeting Hindu girls specifically, non-Hindu perpetrator targeting Hindu women as a pattern, or, for example, rape as a weapon used against women with religious hate as the motivation. Since the religious identity of the victim is the primary marker owing to which the perpetrator targeted the victim, it would be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. The second prime category selected is- Attacked not resulting in death. The sub-category selected is- Attacked for refusal to convert. When there is pressure, threat or coercion employed upon the Hindu victim to convert to a different religion, in several cases, the victim refuses to succumb to the pressure/threats. Once the victim refuses, the perpetrator proceeds to attack/assault the victim owing to his/her refusal to convert. In such cases, the pressure/threat/intimidation/coercion/violence itself is driven by animosity towards the victim’s Hindu faith. The violence, then, is another hate crime driven by the victim’s refusal to abandon his professed faith, Hinduism, and convert to the religion of a non-Hindu perpetrator. Since the victim’s faith is at the heart of the pressure to convert and the ensuing violence towards the victim, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. This case has been added to the tracker because a Hindu woman was pressured for religious conversion by a Muslim man, leading up to a deadly attack when she refused. The purpose of forced religious conversion reveals the intent of the accused to strip the victim of her Hindu identity and impose Islam upon her. Forced conversions such as this do not occur in a vacuum; they are rooted in deep‑seated hostility towards the faith of the victim, which makes this a clear case of a crime driven by religious hatred. Also, the attack was not just personal vengeance; it was punishment for resisting an attempt at religious conversion. Such actions stem from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith. Therefore, religious conversions, even of minors, are often seen as a badge of honour, totally disregarding the methods used to achieve it. Since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incidents based on when an event occurred or when the victim's ordeal began. It is important to clarify that none of the media sources covering this case has specified the exact date when the harassment to convert started. Therefore, for documentation purposes, we have recorded the date based on when the attack occurred: 3rd December 2025.
