Hindu woman betrayed and murdered through identity fraud by Muslim man in Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
A Hindu woman from Bisalpur in Pilibhit district was murdered in Bareilly after being deceived and trapped by a notorious criminal named Arif, also known as Guddu, who had hidden his religious identity while luring her into a relationship. According to the police, Arif concealed who he was, won the young woman’s trust, and pulled her into a romantic relationship. He then lived with her for several months in a live-in arrangement in the Bithri Chainpur area of Bareilly. When he lost interest, Arif strangled the woman to death inside their rented house on 4 July 2025 and fled. He had been absconding for five months. After the murder, a reward of twenty-five thousand rupees was announced for his arrest, and three special police teams were deployed to track him. The accused kept shifting locations and was hiding in several places, including Kishanganj in Bihar, Guwahati, and Delhi. On Wednesday, he came to Bareilly court to inquire about the date of his case hearing. Acting on a tip-off, the Bithri Chainpur police intercepted him at the Dohra Tiraaha. As soon as the police challenged him, Arif opened fire rapidly at the officers. The police fired back in self-defence, hitting him in both legs and bringing him down on the spot. A country made pistol and a large quantity of live cartridges were recovered from him. Arif was immediately taken to the district hospital, where treatment is underway under heavy police security. Police officials confirmed that Arif is a dangerous history sheeter, with twenty-six serious criminal cases registered against him in various police stations, including murder, robbery, and dacoity. SP North Bareilly Mukesh Kumar Mishra stated that Operation Langda is tightening the grip on criminals across the district. He added that a dangerous offender like Arif has been caught alive and that strict action will follow in the murder case and all other cases linked to him.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case had been added to the tracker under the primary category, Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The secondary category selected is, Man pretends to be Hindu. The tertiary category selected is, name changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this particular case, the perpetrator intentionally targeted a Hindu woman by assuming a Hindu identity and adopting the name “Guddu” solely to gain her trust. His deception was rooted in exploiting her Hindu identity. He approached her as someone belonging to her community, fully aware that she would not have entered the relationship had she known his real identity. This makes her Hindu identity central to the act of manipulation. By deliberately misrepresenting his religion, embedding himself in her life under a fabricated Hindu persona, and then killing her when the deception could not be sustained, the perpetrator used her Hindu identity as both a point of entry and a point of vulnerability. The exploitation, betrayal, and ultimate violence all stemmed from the fact that she was a Hindu woman and was targeted precisely because of it. Thus, this case is understood as a Hinduphobia-driven hate crime, where the victim’s Hindu identity was not incidental but fundamental to the deception, control, and eventual fatal harm she suffered.
