Hindu man brutally assaulted by Muslim group over minor dispute in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
In the Khanjanpur village of Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, communal tensions escalated after a Hindu man named Gajendra Singh Yadav was brutally assaulted by a Muslim man named Nazim over a minor scuffle. The incident occurred on 28 October 2025, when Gajendra Singh Yadav was transporting paddy on his tractor-trolley, when he found stones obstructing the road in front of Nazim’s house. He asked Nazim to clear the obstruction, but Nazim refused, triggering a heated exchange between members of the Hindu and Muslim communities. The heated exchange rapidly escalated into a clash between the two communities involving sticks and sharp weapons. During the attack, Gajendra sustained severe injuries, including deep wounds to his ears, hands and head, and was taken to the Bankeganj Community Health Centre for urgent treatment, while eight others from both sides suffered minor injuries. After receiving information, the police arrived at the location and managed to restore order in the area. A complaint was registered against nine individuals from both sides: Gajendra Yadav, Surjeet, Amarpal, Pradeep Kumar, Badan Singh, Nazim, Shahnaz Bano, Meraj Bano and Shadab alias Aamir. The following day, police arrested Shadab, Munna, Pradeep, Amarpal and Surjeet, filed their challan and produced them before the court, after which all were sent to jail.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the immediate cause of the crime appears to be non-religious, that is, a dispute over removing stones from a public road, which escalated into a violent clash between members of the Hindu and Muslim communities. The confrontation began when a Hindu man, Gajendra Singh Yadav, asked Nazim to clear stones placed on the road outside his house, which Nazim refused, resulting in the altercation between the two. What began as a minor exchange quickly intensified into a communal altercation, with members of both communities joining in and using sticks and sharp weapons. The violence resulted in Gajendra sustaining serious injuries. The intensity of the assault and the violence over such a minor issue raises concern about whether simmering communal tensions in the area or the underlying religious hostility could have contributed to this escalation by Nazim and members of the Muslim community. Numerous documented instances show Muslims targeting Hindus with hostility rooted in disdain for the Hindu community and faith. These acts are rarely isolated instances of violence but rather stem from entrenched religious intolerance and animosity, fitting into a broader pattern of anti-Hindu hatred. Many communal attacks by Muslims against Hindus stem directly from such religious hatred, rendering this incident a strong candidate for hate crime classification. However, in this specific case, the available reports do not provide any concrete evidence of religious hatred as the motive. There is no mention of religious slurs, targeted attacks based on identity, or any indication that the violence was premeditated or directed at the victim because he was Hindu. The incident appears to have developed spontaneously from a local dispute, which then escalated due to the involvement and anger of individuals from both communities. Neither the police nor the victim’s family nor the media reports have suggested that the assault was driven by religious animosity, and the FIR names individuals from both sides, further complicating the issue. Therefore, this case is currently being added to the "Undecided" database. If any new evidence surfaces confirming religious animosity as a key factor, the case will be reclassified and added to the Hate Crime Database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: In this case, although the main perpetrator is the accused man named Nazim, it cannot be denied that other Muslims, namely Shahnaz Bano, Meraj Bano and Shadab alias Aamir, also supported Nazim in attacking the Hindu victim, Gajendra, and other Hindus. Henceforth, for the purpose of documenting this crime, the perpetrator count will be recorded as '4'.
