Hindu activists attacked by radicals for opposing cow smuggling in Kalaburagi, Karnataka

Case Summary
On the Ring Road near Ramnagar in Kalaburagi city, two activists, Rohith and Anil, were attacked after stopping a lorry that was illegally transporting cattle. The two Hindu men attempted to verify the vehicle's transport documents and permissions because they believed the truck, travelling from Afzalpur towards Aland, was smuggling cows. When they questioned the legitimacy of the transport, the individuals accompanying the lorry responded with aggression instead of providing the requested documentation. The situation escalated into a physical assault, where the attackers reportedly aimed to intimidate the activists and stop them from further checking the cattle transport. The activists were targeted despite the legal protections provided by the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act. A video of the assault was recorded and shared widely, drawing attention to the dangers faced by individuals attempting to prevent illegal cattle trafficking. The Kalaburagi Suburban Police later initiated an investigation into the incident. In the aftermath, local Hindu groups strongly condemned the attack, calling it a reflection of the increasing hostility towards those working to uphold cattle protection laws. They urged swift action, including arrests and strict enforcement of anti-cow slaughter laws, to ensure that people working to protect the law are not subjected to violence.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, two Hindu youths were brutally attacked by cow smugglers. He had only tried to resist the illegal transport of cows, sacred to Hindus as symbols of motherhood and protection. For this act of courage, he paid with his life. He was dragged, beaten, and his face was crushed—a level of barbarity that shocks the conscience. The brutality of this case and the disproportionate violence over the Hindu activist’s simple attempt to stop cow smuggling raised grave concerns.
