Dalit Hindu girls abducted by Muslim youth in Mandsaur; one raped, another forced to convert to Islam

Case Summary
In the Khajuri Runda village of Garoth, Madhya Pradesh, three Hindu girls, belonging to the same family, were abducted by a Muslim youth. It was later revealed that one of the Hindu girls was raped, while the other was converted to Islam. According to reports, the Hindu girls, who belonged to the Meena community, went missing under mysterious circumstances. Members of the Meena community stated that a Muslim youth from the village lured the girl away, pressured her for religious conversion to Islam, and raped her. They also revealed that the accused man’s father, Abdul Latif Mussoorie, had illegally occupied approximately 10 bighas of government and drainage land in the village and had a history of multiple criminal cases, some of which remained pending. Based on the complaint, a case was registered against the accused under the sections of rape. The members of the Meena community also submitted a memorandum to SDM Rahul Chauhan of Garoth, demanding swift action. They warned that if the case of kidnapping and rape was not vigorously pursued against the accused youth within seven days, the Meena community would launch a violent protest, placing full responsibility on the administration. After a three-day search, police recovered two of the girls, while the third remained untraced. Police also noted that the victim was an adult while the accused was a minor.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, three Hindu girls were lured and abducted by a Muslim youth, who had been in prior contact with her and was aware of her religious identity. This could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as it has been observed in several instances where Muslim perpetrators have targeted Hindu women due to animosity towards Hindus and their faith. Given that she was an adult, it remains entirely possible that she acted of her own free will and went away with the accused voluntarily. Though being an adult does not negate the possibility of manipulation or coercion, it requires cautious evaluation of the available evidence. Although it has been stated in some accounts that the accused converted the victim, there is currently no statement from the victim herself confirming or contesting this claim. In the absence of her testimony, it is not possible to conclusively determine whether any conversion, if it occurred, was voluntary or the result of coercion, deception, or undue influence. Additionally, the case was registered against the accused only on sections related to rape.
