Hanuman Chalisa recital at Gurugram cafe stopped because of continuous anon complaints and police intervention
Case Summary
In March 2023, a video of the Hanuman Chalisa recital at a cafe in Gurugram grabbed a lot of attention. This cafe named ‘Cake Desire’ is in the Sector 22 market of Gurugram and is owned by Vivek Gulati. On May 25, 2023, Vivek Gulati said that the police are under pressure to stop his programme due to the anonymous complaints they have been receiving against his initiative. The cafe owner said that approximately a week after his Hanuman Chalisa video went viral, cops began receiving complaints from unknown numbers.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, there is a strong suspicion that the anonymous complaints against the playing of the Hanuman Chalisa were by those who held religious animosity towards the outward celebration of the Hindu faith. However, the calls have remained 'anonymous'. Since there is no confirmation as to who were the complainants and no additional indication about the religious animosity, this case is being categorised as undecided. If more information emerges, it will be added to the hate crime database.
