Kerala's Thrissur Pooram festival disrupted by Police excesses, including restrictions
Case Summary
The famous Thrissur Pooram festival in Kerala was marred by police excesses, causing disruption to the celebrations. The police's interference, including excessive force and restrictions on devotees' entry, led to delays in the festivities and the fireworks display. The Thiruvambady section, one of the participating temples, staged a symbolic protest by turning off lights at the Pooram panthal, a first in the festival's history. Despite attempts to resolve the issues, arguments between temple officials and police over restrictions during the fireworks display resulted in the cancellation of Pooram proceedings. The customary practices were conducted in a low-key manner, and the fireworks, originally scheduled for 3 AM, were delayed until 7 AM. Additionally, the procession of the Paramekkavil section faced police barricades, causing disturbance and restricting the participation of devotees and musicians. The development triggered sharp political reactions in the state as the opposition parties BJP and UDF slammed the LDF government for dampening the festivities. City Police Commissioner Ankit Asokan faced criticism for blocking the entry of parasols and shouting at devotees. An altercation between police and Devaswom officials exacerbated the tension. The BJP accused the government of conspiring to sabotage the Pooram, demanding a serious probe. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan promised an inquiry by the DGP into the complaints raised by temple management and attendees. Following discussions involving political leaders and officials, efforts were made to persuade the Devaswom to complete the ceremonies and proceed with the fireworks.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, there is a strong suspicion that excesses and restrictions were meted out against Hindu devotees owing to the Left government's inherent bias against Hindu customs and rituals. The suspicions are made stronger based on the protest of the devotees and priests involved in the festival. However, it is also entirely possible that this was a string of bad decisions because the police failed at adequate crowd management. One of the main ingredients in determining if the restriction by the state was an infringement on rights is the intent behind the order. Since the intent of the action in this case is unclear, this case is being added to the undecided database.
