Bangladeshi woman blackmails Hindu man with his private pictures, pressures him to convert and sign Nikah documents
Case Summary
On August 22, 2023, a Bangladeshi woman named Sonia Akhtar arrived in Noida with her one-year-old infant. She claimed that a Noida resident, Saurabh Kant Tiwari, had performed Nikah with her in 2021 after converting to Islam in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Sonia further alleged that Saurabh later deserted her. Meanwhile, the 47-year-old Hindu man, said that his 29-year-old Bangladeshi wife, Sonia, and her family coerced him to convert to Islam and sign marriage documents forcefully. He said that they became intimate after growing close, during which Sonia took objectionable photos and footage to blackmail him into marriage. They married in an Islamic ceremony in April 2021. Tiwari stated he was pressured into paying Rs 1 crore after the wedding, despite Sonia being aware of his first wife and children in India. He lost his job in the neighbouring country and returned to India. However, Sonia and family continued to blackmail him with threats, using compromising photos and videos.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When Hindu men are in a relationship with non-Hindu women, there are cases where the man is blackmailed to convert his religion. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim, however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual and the non-Hindu woman starts blackmailing a Hindu man to convert his religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu man is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to his family, threats of violence etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. In this case, the primary factor that establishes that it was a religiously motivated hate crime is the testimony of the Hindu man who himself revealed that he was blackmailed into conversion by the Bangladeshi woman. He said that the accused used his private pictures to blackmail him into signing nikah and conversion papers. He was also pressured to pay Rs 1 crore after the wedding. The Hindu man got into a relationship with the Muslim woman assuming that their religious identities would not be a hindrance in their life, however, the Muslim woman started applying pressure on the victim to convert to Islam, pointing towards a crime with his motivations being driven by religious hate.
