Case Summary
Communal tensions flared up in the Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh on Friday, August 18, after a Hindu student commented in response to his Muslim classmate’s offensive post against Hindu Dharma. The matter pertains to the Sheeshgarh police station precinct where a Muslim mob comprising thousands gheraoed the police station on Friday at around 9 pm after a Class 9th Hindu student wrote offensive comments in response to his Muslim classmate’s insulting remarks about Hinduism. The agitated mob that first laid siege outside the police station seeking the Hindu youth’s arrest later gathered outside the Hindu youth’s house and pelted stones.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. Muslims in this instance attacked the Hindu youth for expressing his displeasure at his Muslim classmate for denigrating his faith. The Hindu boy faced a brutal attack; his family was intimidated merely because he expressed his disapproval of the disparaging comment made by his Muslim classmate about Hindu Dharma, The mob hurled stones at the boy's home and surrounded the police station in an effort to get the Hindu youth arrested. Only if the perpetrators possess a deep disdain for Hinduism can such disparaging acts be carried out. Since hatred against Hindus and their religion is the main motivation for these actions, this event has been added to the tracker under the appropriate category.
